Finally saw Catching Fire (sp poss)

It's been so long since I read the book that I really don't remember it well, so I loved the movie.

I plan on rereading it soon, but in the meantime can somebody remind what they changed and/or screwed up?

I know a lot of people were upset that they didn't show the mockingjay on Plutarch's pocketwatch while he and Katniss were dancing.

It's funny. It's such a small detail, but I was missing it too. Even though she didn't catch on to the Mockingjay, I felt like in the book it tipped her off that something was a little different about Plutarch than other Gamemakers.

I have a completely different opinion about that part. I love that they didn't add it. At that point in the movie, you were already seeing that the Mockingjay symbol was coming to stand for rebellion. Had they shown it while they were dancing, it would have ruined the whole "surprise" (obvisouly for those who hadn't read the books) that Plutarch was in on the plan. I think it added that "AHA" moment to the end of the movie (again for the non-readers)

When Katniss asked him why he became Head Gamemaker, he said something like "to make the Games mean something." Which echoes Peeta's quote in HG that he wanted "to be more than just a piece in their Games."

There were also other lines that I can't remember.

I also just saw it last weekend, and I thought it was phenomenal - and I am seriously the pickiest person alive when it comes to book-to-movie adaptations.

Here was my one thing, which was TOTALLY not a big deal at all, and would have probably bothered me even if I had never read the books - the fact that the "force field" was actually a giant, reinforced, metal structure with wires and things sticking out. That makes NO SENSE. It's just a force field, not a superdome. If there was a giant steel structure why on earth would they NEED a force field? I get that they did it for the visual but it still seemed dumb.

@myjunegirls @mrsC7  I agree that they did get it other places and maybe their choices fit better than the watch scene, but I still missed it!

I agree too with @84Lauren. It's minor but the chink and the force field were changed. It probably made more sense cinematically, but I still noticed it.

Yeah, I thought that was weird too @84Lauren but I just summed it up to it transferring to movie better this way.

I had completely forgotten that Plutarch had a mockingjay on his pocketwatch, I think @myjunegirls is totally right though, if they showed that in the movie it would have made it really clear as to where he stood.

Another question... I thought I remembered Katniss being more torn between Peeta and Gale in the books. When watching the movie I just feel like she loves Gale but is forced into a fake relationship with Peeta, it feels like the love triangle is missing to me.

edit: I guess it's not really much of a question :-/

When I read the books, I always thought people made more of the love triangle than there was (at least until the last one). I saw Gale as an older brother figure and Peeta as a really nice guy, who obviously cared about her, but that whole relationship was a sham (or at least one-sided) for most of the series. I kind of liked that it wasn't such a big deal in the movie.

Oh I completely agree. I don't think it would have worked in the movie to show the mocking jay and I wasn't one that was upset by it. Some things just don't translate from the book to get screen and I think this is one of those things but I get why others are upset because it's a big moment in the book. This whole thread is making me want to go see it again.

I thought they did an excellent job of this in the movie. In the book, she feels like she "belongs" to Gale mostly because of her guilt at him getting whipped, which I got from the movie. She doesn't realize her feelings for Peeta are real until they're in the arena, and even then it takes a backseat to you know, not dying, so it's not very pronounced. In the movie, when Peeta almost dies, and Snow's granddaughter says "I hope I love someone that much someday" and the look on his face - OMG, perfect. They did it better than I could have hoped, given that in the book it was all internal monologue.

I don't know if I'd call it a plot device, I think they basically added her in to create dialogue where there was only internal thoughts/impressions in the book.

The scene that was excluded which disappointed me was when Katniss got stuck outside the electrified fence. I remember really liking that scene in the book and the whole "will she/won't she" get caught was really suspenseful.

They also excluded meeting the two runaways who were fleeing to District 13.

Yeah I tried explaining the runaways to DH but thought they did a decent job without them.

These were the 2 scenes that I missed the most in the movie. I thought Katniss getting stuck outside the fence really drove home the point that the peacekeepers/capital were in charge of everything. I guess the 2 people headed to District 13 would have tipped off a lot of non-readers to the lies of the capital, but I remembered that being a fairly large part of a chapter. I guess you have to cut something but seriously the movie could have been another hour long and I still would have loved every minute!

I'm wondering if they are going to use her to play on the "new hunger games" that the former tributes vote on after the have Snow in custody. If I remember right Coin tells them that Snow has a granddaughter and they were going to put her into the arena.
