Anyone listen to books when you run? Or interesting podcasts?

Where do you download from and how much do you pay?

Alternatively, I'm interested in podcasts like from NPR or something? Those are free, right?

I find that now that I can do longer runs, I get bored with just music. I need something that is going to make me want to keep going.

Re: Anyone listen to books when you run? Or interesting podcasts?

  • I like This American Life and Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me from NPR. And yes, they're free!
  • I just started listening to books when I run, but have been listening on my commute for the past five years. I check them out from my library (free!) and then put one or two CDs on my ipod at a time. Tomorrow I have a 16 mile run scheduled music just doesn't cut it for that long.

Not really knowing what kind of books you like here are just a few of my recent favorites. Combination good book and good narrator/narrators.

    Lottery by Patrica Wood

Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein

    Testimony by Anita Shreve

  • I'm a fitness nut so I like listening to running and fitness podcasts when I run. My twofavorites are: "Phedippidations" (running podcast) and the Fit Cast (fitness podcast).

I also like This American Life from NPR.

You can go on iTunes and there are TONS of free podcasts available.

  • Yup, all the NPR podcasts are free on iTunes. If you go to the podcast section of the iTunes store, they're pretty easy to find. I've been listening to the live concert podcasts from All Songs Considered, but I might try one of the non-music ones in the future.
  • I love the podcasts from,,
  • I'm so glad to see someone else who prefers listening to podcasts over music while running Big Smile

Some of my favorites: Harvard Business IdeaCast, This American Life, Stuff You Should Know, Intelligence Squared, Manager Tools, Quick & Dirty Tips: Public Speaking, Quick & Dirty Tips: Nutrition Diva, some others about the insurance field(my profession).

I can get lost for hours in the iTunes stores (where podcasts are free!)
