new here, new to running - half marathon training ?

omg - what have i done - i am NOT a runner and have decided to do a half marathon - its not until november, so i am pretty sure i can train by then...

fitness mag just had a training schedule this month which looked straight forward - are there any tried and true references out there or training schedules that anyone wants to share?

anyone else running a half for the first time?

  • Me!  I figured, if I can run 8 now, why not just try for 13.1?
  • I'm running my first in May.  I think you totally have enough time to train. 

    Can you run at all?  My suggestion would be maybe to start with the Couch to 5K program on  Its free, and it takes you from not running at all basically, to running 3 miles in about 9 weeks.  After you accomplish that, and get a good base in, then you can definitely find a half marathon training program.  Lots of people use ones by Jeff Galloway or Hal Higdon.  I'm personally using one off of the Smart Coach on

  • I used Hla Higdon's novice half marathon training.  You can check it out for yourself on his web site.  He also has 5K, 10K, marathon, etc.... training programs.

  • In the past I have used the personalized training plan that you can get through Smart Coach on  GL!
  • Wow!! Good luck! I'm running my second half marathon in May. My only advice:  if you get injured at all during training, REST!!! And take care of it immediately!

  • I'm also using Hal Higdon's 1/2 marathon novice program.  So far so good, but I'm only 3 weeks in :P  My first half is the first Sunday in May.
  • Hi! I'm running my first half in October. I started running in summer 2008 and have followed Hal Higdon's beginner 5K, beginner 10K, and intermediate 10K, and love them all.

  • Too funny. That same article inspired me to go for my first 1/2 as well!! I just started running again in January (post baby) and I'm hoping to be ready for the 1/2 the first weekend in May.

    I'm getting my first 5K under my belt in 2 weeks and then will buckle down with a program after that. Haven't decided totally on which one yet.
