(#) End o' week check in/ paging bridey

We haven't done our daily checkin' in (I've been super busy at work so posting less) and I thought I'd see how everyone did this week.

How goes it?

Good week for me -- I finished week 4 of couch to 5k and will start week 5 tomorrow. I'm kind of scared, because it seems like a big jump! According to the 9-week program, I won't be ready for a 5 k until the second week of March, but I signed up to run in one at the end of Feb -- I wouldn't have done so, but I'll be visiting a friend in Chicago and it sounds fun/empowering. Bridey, you've done c to 5k before -- think I could jump ahead two weeks?

Re: (#) End o' week check in/ paging bridey

  • Yay, I'm glad we're back to this!  I haven't worked out since Monday, and I had pizza last night.  I'm trying to find a balance with classes, because now the semester is hitting me hard, and I need to figure out how to eat a good healthy dinner at like 10:30 pm when I'm starving and exhausted!

I know I can't work out on class days, so I have to make myself do it all the other days!

Anyway, weigh in tomorrow, so hopefully I haven't gained.  I think I'll probably be okay, but it wasn't my very best of weeks.

    Well, that would be telling

  • I have had a rough week.

I managed to get in a few more runs and some walks, so exercise-wise I'm ok.  I was supposed to start week 4 today, but it was raining when I woke up.  If it's clear out later today, I'll do it, otherwise, I'll have to hope that the weather is better tomorrow.

I've been stressed out about my job situation.  I still haven't heard back from the place I interviewed at last week (I checked in, and I'm still optimistic, but the situation is complicated), and I've been super wound up about it.  The stress has manifested itself as 3 glasses of wine on Wednesday night, and a burrito last night.

Tonight we are going to a movie, which will get me out of the house and not eating or drinking, so that's a good thing.  Nothing too crazy planned for this weekend, so I should be able to get back on track, provided the weather clears up.

I know how you feel...this was my life when I was in law school for years.  It sucks.  I think it's why I gained so much weight...I'd not eat for hours, and then be so starving when I came home late that I'd eat a HUGE dinner.  So just be careful about falling into that trap.

I found a few things helped - a handful of almonds and raisins or dried apricots really helps cut hunger.  I'd pack some small baggies and just throw them all in my bag at the beginning of the week.  They can stay there forever, so you'll always have them handy.   Whole Foods makes soy milk "juice boxes"...they are totally for 5 year olds, but I'd buy them anyway and keep those in my bag too.

Finally, an easy, filling, and satisfying dinner late at night - a bowl of cereal.  I have no idea what it's impact is on the metabolism just before bed, but it's easy to control the calories with a bowl, takes no time to prepare, and it should fill you up fast.

I'm doing pretty good this week. I slept in Tuesday, so no working out, and then I had to bring work home. I was going to use the elliptical yesterday evening, but stupid f-ing attorneys keep filing late briefs, so guess who got to take work home?  Grrrr!  I really don't make enough to take work home.

But I went swimming again this morning.  Really trying to get into a better routine with that so that I can improve my endurance distance. I wanted to go 20 laps, but I stopped at 15 after my goggles kept leaking.  Off to the sporting goods store tonight.

We are going to a wedding tomorrow, but I am driving, so unlike every other wedding I've ever been to, I won't be able to drink myself silly.  Hopefully that will cut down on my drunk munchies, too.

Brookles, if you feel ok to skip ahead a week, I think you'd be fine.  I wouldn't be able to do it, but I'm still a good 50 pounds overweight so I think it would be different for me.  You could also try doing all three days of one week in a row, rest a day, and do the next week.  That would get you 2 weeks of it smooshed into one.  If you skip ahead and it's a little too hard, you can always just sneak a 30 second walk break into one of the runs.  I've done that before.  Your adrenaline will probably be pumping for the actual 5k, and you might feel pushed a little harder by the other people.  I'd say as long as you're willing, if need be, to take a brief walk break halfway through the 5k, go for it. Just listen to your body.  If it's telling you to rest, make sure you don't overexert yourself and get hurt.  But if it's telling you that you can do it, go for it!

I am going to start it again as soon as I get back from vacation in March. It might be warm enough next week to start, but I would only be on week 3 or 4 by the time vacation rolls around, and we will probably consume so much beer that I'd wind up starting back at week 1 anyway.

Little Bridey Twist, begging for a bowl of Chobani. Just like in the orphanages of yore.
  • Thanks for the tips, ESF!  I need to get my act together and make a big shopping trip.  I haven't had good breakfasts in the house all week, so I've been just eating wheat toast.  Yuck.
    Well, that would be telling

Thanks for the advice -- good to hear from someone who has finished it. I'll maybe see how week 5 goes and try skipping ahead as I get closer to the 5k.

I wouldn't say I finished it. I got to where I could run a 5K, with a 2-minute walk break in the middle. I was signed up for Race for the Cure and figured my adrenaline would help me overcome my need for a 2-minute break. And then I got the shin splints. Boo. But this time, oh this time, I will freaking do it.

    Hell yeah you will!

I am kind of banking on adrenaline to get me through it by then, too. Plus, the race I'm running involves snacks at the end as a reward. That's what will really get me moving.

  • I had a pretty good eating week and stuck to my workout plan. I finished week 2 of C25k today, and am loving it. I find Suz's podcasts funny but great for running. I'm going to Vegas next week, so I'll be doing week 4 on the treadmill in the hotel. I hope I stick to it.  I've lost three pounds, so I'm please! :)
