1000 Splendid Suns

I just finished reading this book, and I'm so amazed by it! I really want to talk to others that have read it... I haven't read the Kite Runner yet, but thought maybe I needed a breather between books, with how heavy that one left me feeling. Any thoughts on the book?

Re: 1000 Splendid Suns

  • Loved it--one of the best books I have ever read.

  • I really loved this book.

I actually liked Kite Runner even more, but both are excellent books. He's a great author!

  • I read The Kite Runner first and loved it...and I actually liked A Thousand Splendid Suns even more!  I thought it was so interesting to read about these historical events from the perspective a woman living there.  It hurt my heart to read it at times.

  • i absolutely loved it.  the kite runner was fantastic too.  i would grab a next novel written by him if/whenever it's published.

  • I haven't read Kite Runner yet, but I tore through Splendid Suns. Such a powerful book, and one of those books that stays with you. Very eye opening, too.

  • I have Kite Runner, but have not picked it up yet. I read 1000 Splendid Suns in a day. I could not put it down. It was such a powerful book, and I just couldn't believe that those type of things are happening. It opened my eyes, really, to a whole new world.

    It is an amazing book!

  • I agree with pp, it was one of the best books I've ever read. I read it and the Kite Runner back to back and was just in awe of both of them.
  • I loved both books, but they are both pretty heavy, I don't know if I would read them back to back.  I think I preferred 1000 Splendid Suns because it is written from a woman's perspective.  It impressed me how a male author was able to write so vividly about women's experiences.
  • definitely one of the greatest books i've ever read.  i agree that you maybe shouldn't read The Kite Runner right after ATSS.  they're both very heavy material.  but 2 of the greatest books i've ever read.
  • I think I actually liked Kite Runner a tiny bit better, but A Thousand Splendid Suns was terrific. I will admit at times I was so horrified I wasn't sure if I could keep reading, but it was such a moving story, and to think that those things are common for some women is heart-breaking.

  • I read both and they were both amazing. Both have stuck with me the last few years since I've read them, the stories were so....I don't even have a word for it! I would definitely pick up Kite Runner but there is also some hard material in that one too so I would recommend reading something a little lighter in between!

  • I've read both. I loved 1000SS and also loved TKR. they're completely different stories though. i preferred 1000ss but it's like comparing apples and oranges to me. the stories are so different it's hard to compare.
