flu-how long are you contagious?

DD came down with it friday and is acting fine tonight.  Her fever is gone, she just has her cough, sneezing, and runny nose today.  I'm just wondering how long she'll need to be away from other kids.  I'm sure I'll be getting it so I'm trying to conserve my sick days.

Re: flu-how long are you contagious?

  • Was she ever on antibiotics? I think after a day of being on antibiotics, you aren't contagious anymore? Sorry I don't have more info. Hope she feels better soon!
  • It doesn't sound like the flu to me as it tends to last a week or two. Did your doc diagnose it?  DS came down with the same symptoms last night and it seems like a cold to me, though it's only been 24 hours, he's acting fine, just a little extra fussy and hardly slept last night.

Also, the flu, along with colds are viral infections.  Antibiotics only work on bacterial infections.

As for how long they are contagious this article says from a day before symptoms appear through the end of symptoms. http://kidshealth.org/parent/infections/lung/flu.html
