Help me make life decisions.

I know this is a decision that only H and I can make, but humor me.

IUI vs TI

We have a very small male factor issue, but still, post wash his last count was 35 million, which is actually really good.  So that means that the chances only increase by 2-3 percent with IUI.

My only successful cycle, however, was with IUI.

I don't know if the additional $400 for IUI is worth 2-3 percent.

Thoughts??

IUI - BFP! Baby boy born still - August 2012
IVF - BFP - miscarriage June 2013
FET - BFN
FET - BFN
Switched clinics
IVF with PGD - three embryos created, all healthy - July 2014
FET - transferred two embryos (boy and girl) - Nov 2014 - BFP!
Baby Boy born July 2015

Re: Help me make life decisions.

  • TI. I'm not extremely informed on either of these unfortunately, so my opinion is probably mute. But this is my 2 cents :-)
  • Will you be doing injections or Clomid whether you do TI or IUI?

    and

Will you be monitored with ultrasounds whether you do TI or IUI?

Diagnosed with Severe DOR at 31 years old (AMH .14 FSH 9.8)
D & L are here at 34 weeks 4 days by vaginal and breech delivery on 11/19/2013

  • What's $400 in the grand scheme of things?   If you do TI and it's negative, are you going to wonder/be pissed that you didn't spend the $400?

  • I'd spend $400 for any increase in chances. If it was thousands I would not.

Femara + trigger.  I respond well to that combination.

And yes to an ultrasound, regardless of whether it is TI or IUI.

  • I personally would do IUI. I just figure if I'm spending money, I might as well get the most bang for my buck.

  • I think if you're okay spending the money, I would pay the $400 and do IUI.

I don't know.  I really don't.  At this point, I don't feel the clock ticking anymore.  The hope that "this month is it" is long gone.

I think it will cause you a lot of stress to give up that 2-3% better chance especially when you are already paying for the medication and monitoring.  I know realistically it is not a lot, but you know how we are all a little OCD (with good reason) about having the best chance.

Can you shell out for one more IUI (since you missed last cycle) and then do a couple of TI cycles?

It's a hard decision.  But you will make the right one - whatever you choose.

  • For me, I would choose the IUI.  The pressure to have sex after all those months of trying just got to be too much for us.  But I guess if your Dh is a rockstar and it's easy to get him to do it on command... I would try sex this cycle.  Good luck with whatever you decide.

    Edited: typo

  • If I had the $400 I would definitely go with the IUI because it had worked for me in the past. If I didn't have the experience you had with the prior IUI though I think I would do TI.

This has been an issue for us too.  He can do it, but it has become a chore, for sure.  I prefer IUI for this reason, among others.  He prefers TI because he feels like an IUI is almost an insult, like his boys can't swim.

    That is my question too.

I would spend the money and do IUI. Better to get a BFN and know that you did everything possible than get a BFN and have that nagging though that you could have done more. Gah, that is a terrible way to think but YKWIM.

Tell him it's not an insult, it's like they're royalty.. They have to be carried to their destination so they don't wear themselves out on the way! His swimmers are just too awesome to just do it like the common folk! At least that's what we joke about in our house :)

  • I would probably do IUI.  Is there a limit to the number of cycles that you can do with femara like clomid has?  That would make me want to make every cycle count.

  • I would do IUI. With our IVF we opted to freeze sperm like an insurance policy just in case. We didn't need to use it because DH had enough on the day but we still opted to pay the $500 just in case.
