Books to get rid of

Where is the best place for me to donate or try to give away books I no longer want or have room for? I tried the library and was told that they weren't accepting any. Go figure!

Re: Books to get rid of

  • If you want stuff in return, I'd try posting to PBS or you could always donate to Goodwill/Salvation Army or something similar.

I heard that some bookstores were doing book drives to donate to people who lost everything in Hurricane Sandy, so you could check into that and see if any in your neighborhood are participating.

  • Hospital? I donated a bunch of my kids/middle school books to the local children's hospital
Whether or not you find your own way, you're bound to find some way. If you happen to find my way, please return it, as it was lost years ago. I imagine by now it's quite rusty.”

This.  Or do you have a veteran's home?  We donated a lot of old books to our state veteran's home a few years back.

This about what books you're donating if you go with an option like this though.  Chances are the folks at the veteran's home aren't going to be all that interested in reading a big stack of YA, kwim?  Ditto bringing a big pile of Stephen King books to the children's hospital.

Ha.  Some sick person would probably do this.

  • My kids school does a fundraiser every year where they get everyone to donate books, then sell them.  It's part of their fall festival.  Maybe a nearby school/church/shelter does something similar?

Also thrift stores benefitting charities -- there are a two near me that I like a lot - one is run by a battered women's shelter and the other the humane society.

  • I usually post them on either bookmooch.com (a trading site similar to paperback swap) or on freecycle. The benefit to freecycle is that I don't have to pay to mail them and someone else does the picking up.

  • I take books, puzzles, games to our local homeless shelter. They can either put them in the liittle library they have for their residents, or if it is a book they already have several copies of it they sell it in their store.
