Can I be an international nestie?

Hi my name is Alisha. I currently reside in Mexico with my Hubby and 2 kids. We moved here last Feb. I have lurked over a few boards and like what I see. I need other English Speaking people to talk to. It is very hard here. I speak Spanish a little, but I need an improvement. My family and friends are magically too busy for me since I am no longer in the US. Thanks for listening.

Wow, that sounds like its going to be an adventure. I spoke a little spanish when I moved here just not enough. I am in Zinacantepec it is a little city in Toluca. It is beautiful where I am. I wake up everyday with a view of a volcano with snow. I am still getting used to some of the culture here. I do believe I pretty much have it down though. We have a paid for nice house. Lots of chickens, turkeys, pigs, sheep etc. A big change for a city girl. I lived in Myrtle Beach for 8 years.

Wow, that is a big change!   Is Mexican food in Mexico anything like Mexican food as I know it from restaurants in the US and other places?  I ask because if it is anything similar (or better) I am jealous of you getting to eat it all the time!  Spanish food is low on spice (and spices...even pepper) and can sometimes be a bit bland compared to the way Americans tend to go condiment-crazy.

Yeah it is a huge change. Mexican food here is somewhat the same but a little different. It is ALOT hotter and in the US it is Americanized for us. They like ketchup on everything. They actually make their pizzas without sauce so they can put ketchup and hot sauce on it. I make mole from scratch sometimes and it has alot of ing. there are about 20 ing for one dish. there are black pepper, cloves, chocolate, garlic, onion. I can not find paprika here to save my life. The rice and beans are the same. They don't eat fajitas like we do. The cheeses are different. The food is better once you get used to it. Especially when I cook it.

Here is what the volcano looks like in the winter. I had to borrow this pic because I can't figure out how to use my own. It actually looks a little bigger from my house. Any suggestions on sharing my own pics?

Have you tried Mexican food in Spain yet? I remember going to a Mexican restaurant when I lived in Madrid and ordered a burrito. I was very disappointed when they brought me a tiny little burrito that looked more like a small eggroll! And it was quite expensive too.

  • Thanks everyone! I feel so welcome here. No I haven't been to Spain yet, so I haven't tried their Mexican food. I like going to the street vendors here instead of resturants. They are cheap, made in front of you from fresh ing and made to order. its like a dollar for a mole quesadilla. Its really not that bad farming. We do not have much land, but we have 4 pigs, 4 sheep, laying hens for eggs, a very large turkey named turkey, a turkey hen with chicken babies, a japanese rooster named rodney, 3 bunnies who escape, and a dog named odie. We also have apricot trees, plum trees, apple trees, and pear trees. We just got done planting our corn and pumpkins a few days ago. I get up in the morning and call the chickens for food and feed the other animals. Do it again in the evening and thats it. My SILs are trying to get me to kill my turkey. I refuse as I am a vegetarian. They tend to go behind my back and kill them anyway and bring them to me in a bucket to cook. I scream everytime. I am the animal collector here. One day I looked outside our gate and 3 chicken babies were out there. I opened the gate, they walked in and that was it they were mine. I brought home a puppy while walking to get tortillas. Sorry I am rambling. Its just nice to talk to people who want to listen. Thanks again.

I know I was begging hubby for some chinese food today while we were out. I told him all I eat is mexican food I need a change. Its all meat and chiles. Ugh. he looked at me and laughed. They were planning what kind of mexican meat to buy for lunch, I can give recipes of the foods that I make. Its all from fresh ingredients so everyone that wants them can probably make it or substitute to make it similar. just let me know.

exactly. My turkey probably weighs in at about 30lbs and they want him dead. They do cut off their heads with a steak knife and I find it barbaric. So I refuse to let them have my animals and be a part of it. I will keep you updated with stories. This friday is the celebration of Semana Santa. They will have reinactments of Jesus' torture and dying on the cross that day. It is very real and they actually beat the actor with whips that you can hear 2 blocks away. There is a lot of actual blood shed and he actually goes on the cross. There are 600 year old trees at the church and they are placed in with them. He has to carry the cross on his back all the way through town, up hills etc. Its very interesting to watch. I have pics from last year but I don't know how to upload them on here.
