Hello (Introduction Post)

Hi, my name is Pam. I'm not yet married and I'm in the US so you might wonder why I'm here. This is my first The Nest post. I've been on TK for a while and was just thinking, "I wish they had a 'Moving to India'" board because I care move about that than favors or invitations right now. I am on the Southasian board on the knot, and it's great but mainly that's still people living in the US. And then I remembered the Nest, the "life boards". And I saw this board and realized maybe I could come over here to talk to people who understand about an international move.

My fiance, Ryan, is Indian and lives in India. We're getting legally married in India and I'm moving there probably this fall. (We're trying to have a US wedding celebration this summer or early fall). There is so much in the air right now, nothing yet set in stone.

Anyone else out there in India? And even if not I'm sure there's a lot about the transition, culture shock, and paperwork many of you can teach me about if you went through an international move. I'm glad to have found this board.

Re: Hello (Introduction Post)

  • Hi, welcome to the board and congrats on the upcoming wedding!

That's pretty much all I can say since I can't help with India, but wish I could!!

I'm a Roman living in NYC with my french/italian husband. Are you already looking into finding a job in India, applying for permanent residency or stuff like that? Or practicing Indian with your FI? :)

  • I'm learning Hindi. I actually finished the first segment of this software Ryan found for me free online today. It took me about a week to complete, so I'm going to try to keep that pace up. I did some flashcards in the fall, but with the holidays I stopped and this is me taking the ball back up.

I can't legally work for a year after we marry while we try to get my PIO (Indian version of greencard) so I'm not looking fora job, obviously. But Ryan is. Actually he's meeting in the morning (our night, his morning) with an HR person to negotiate a salary. He has to make enough money to pay for both of us to live and pay my American sized college debt. This has proved hard to find, but this job offer is sooo close. If he can negotiate it up tomorrow, it will be enough for us to move forward.

  • Hi and welcome! I can't comment on a move to India as my English H and I have lived all over, but not there. My best friend did move to Hyderabad for work, though.

    Good luck with everything!

  • Oh oh, are you having a big huge Indian wedding?!  I love those.

Welcome to the board.  I'm American with my Norwegian DBF (we haven't jumped on the marriage train yet, either) living in Australia.

There's a Southasian board on TK?  Color me surprised.

  • Hello & welcome to the board :)

I don't think there's anyone living in India on this board, but a lot of us can certainly sympathise with how hard it is to move abroad for love, culture shock, etc!

  • Hello and welcome!

Sorry I don't know anything about moving to India but I am sure you are in for a real adventure. Good luck with everything!

Oh yeah, I am American living with my American husband in China.

  • Hello and welcome! I know nothing about India, so no help there. I'm American living in France with my French hubby.
  • Didn't we have someone living in India?? She was pregnant, that much I remember, but I haven't seen her around in a while, so maybe she's gone?

Anyway, OP, welcome! I'm an American living in German with my German husband.

Yes, I think so too.  If I remember rightly she was moving back to the US to have her baby.  Her siggy photo had her hanging out of a rock I think?

OP, welcome to the board! I'm not much use to you on the India front but when things get really stressful just remember the big picture... and then come on here and vent!

  • I'm pretty sure there have been two people in India, actually. And there are a few of us who are (or were) married to Indians living elsewhere.

By way of introduction, I'm an American, living in Norway, and currently separating from my Indian husband. But we're still friends!

It's awesome! I was mad they didn't have it when I was planning my nuptials, and the Knotties were all "What the heck is a mang tikka? You're weird."

  • Welcome and congratultions on your upcoming wedding!   Please do tell if you're having a huge Indian wedding- LOVE!

Glad to see that our board is expanding so much beyond Europe! More of a mix.  Hope to "see" you around more often :)

  • Hi! :) I'm in India - we live in the south (Bangalore & Chennai).  I'm an American from Hawaii and moved here with my Indian-born husband 6 years ago.  What part of India are you moving to?

It's definitely a culture shock, but if you have a good support system, it gets easier :)  I am a SAHM, so I don't work here (although I do have a PIO card), but there are tons of expat groups to keep a person pretty busy.

    Good luck with your move!

I am an American (although Indian by heritage - my parents were both born there) living in London w my American husband.

  • Hi and welcome!  Congrats on your wedding(s) and the move.  I've only been to India for holiday, but I can imagine you're in for quite an experience to live there.  Where in India will you be moving?

  • Hey everyone! I am not having a huge Indian wedding. Ryan wants to keep it small. He'd be happy if it would be thirty people, but there is pressure to invite more so it'll probably be over 200 people. Large by American standards, but modest by Indian standards. We are both Christian, so a lot of the elements that you're probably thinking of won't be there. For the most part it'll be Western. But I am wearing a maang tikka, Gilli C! Here's a picture of my wedding jewelry. I love it so:

    image

I'm moving to Gurgaon, which is right next to Delhi in Haryana (in the north). Ryan is originally from Kolkatta and is Anglo-Indian (his ancestors are a big mix of Europeans, though he looks as Indian as they come.)

And guess what? He got the job! Whoo hoo! Now we can really start firming up plans, finally. :)

I know that a lot of loans allow you to defer your loan repayment if you are not working. You should check to see if your loan provider offers that option.

  • I just sent you a pm. I lived in Delhi a couple years ago. I come around here sometimes since we are hoping to move overseas again soon.
  • Yay! Sparkly!

Is it bad that one of the things that made me saddest about DH and I splitting up is that I won't have as many opportunities to wear my Indian formal wear and excessive jewelry?

  • Hi and welcome.  I'm in London with my British DH...his entire family is in India other than his parents, so I'm sure he/I could answer a few questions.  I love the Indian culture a lot, though my ILs aren't overbearingly traditional...what about his family?  Are you going to be moving in with his parents?  Where are you going to be living? (sorry, if you posted already, I haven't read)

My IL's wouldn't be that traditional either. We're all Christian, he doesn't have a Hindu background (he may have had a great-great grandmother...). His dad is mainly British and his mom is mainly Porteguese, but they are both Indian.

We won't be moving in with his parents. I kind of drew a line at that, though he assured me that like 40% of young people do that. He also would like to live on our own. We both live with our parents now, so we're excited to have our own place. Plus his mom is horribly, horribly neat (like she will re-make his bed if she doesn't think it's right. Like now.) and I'm horribly, horribly messy so we'd probably kill each other. :)

We'll be getting some little one bedroom or studio in Gurgaon, which is right next to Delhi. I'm hoping to be near a park.

  • Welcome to the board! Have you spent much time in India so far?

BritsLuna lived there for a short time, she's usually on the H&F board but she's going through some stuff right now and probably won't be very active. Her blog has a lot of posts about India though which might be useful.

DH and I just spent a couple weeks in India on holiday and had an amazing and overwhelming time! I am always so impressed with all the much-more-adventurous-then-me people on this board. DH and I are both Americans and we've lived in Scotland for 6 years now. We love it here, but it's definitely a much easier transition than many other places.

And I absolutely adored all the clothes and jewelry we saw in India, in my next life, I'm totally having an Indian wedding.
