suggestions for the awesomest care package ever

A very good friend of mine is having a rough time.  She got nabbed for an unexpected 365, and apparently it's a really hostile work environment, and she's had to deal with some difficult personal shits.  She'd already asked me for some good kona coffee, so I was already packing a box.  I don't think she's suffering for basics, like tampons or celebrity mags, so I'm looking for completely indulgent creature comforts.  I'm missing the girly gene, so I need some help.

I'm used to creating packages for H.  Kinda different.   I don't think she'll appreciate the blow pop bouquet with steak jerky I sent to H for steak and bj day :)  Actually, with her sense of humor, she totally would.

Re: suggestions for the awesomest care package ever

  • Nail polish and remover, yummy-smelling lotion, a face mask, fuzzy socks, cookies, biscotti to go with the coffee.
    Lilypie Maternity tickers
    Lilypie Second Birthday tickers
  • Socks that soften your feet. I think they have something in them. I can only find them at B&BW.

30 Rock Pictures, Images and Photos
  • Real shampoo and conditioner, not the crap selection she probably has to deal with.
    Shot first, questions later.
  • I would probably want a big bag of Dove Chocolates with Carmel. :) Or homemade Brownies

    This.

Also re: lotions, stay away from fruity smelly stuff. Depending on where she's at the bugs and sand are so not worth smelling nice for a while.

I'd also say books or CDs of something she's into. Maybe a journal to write down all her frustrations. Maybe a GC? Victoria's Secret will ship APO/FPO(or they did when I was deployed) and I'd order myself nice cotton boy shorts since all the px had was waist high granny panties. Just a little pick me up that no one knew about but me. :)

  • Does she have a French Press to go with the coffee you're sending her? Because that would be awesome.

  • She's a pilot, so I'm guessing smelly stuff isn't so nice in close quarters.  She got me my first pedicure, so good call on the polish.  If I know her, she'll have ordered her fancy shampoos and conditioners.  Plus, I'm sure her husband keeps her well supplied.  Girl loves her shampoos.

I haven't ordered from VS before.  Do they identify "thong" on the customs form?  One guy was giving her shtis, and telling everyone else about it, too, when she ordered some feminine products, and he saw the customs form.

Great suggestion!  I know she has one, but I doubt she took it.

Nope. I can't remember what it said exactly but I know it didn't specify. When the guys I was with asked me why I needed lingerie I told them that was for me to know and them not to ever find out. Stupid boys.

Along these lines, is there a certain flavor of dried coffee creamer she likes? Choices in chow halls are pretty slim usually.

  • I put a care package together this weekend for a friend of ours albeit he's a dude.  I picked up a twin sized sheet set from Target, a new bath towel, dark roasted coffee beans (his request, he has a coffee grinder with him already), a box of plastic cutlery, two rolls of duct tape, lots of double A batteries, homemade cookies and soft pretzels.

I like the idea of sending her a small pedi package (nail polish, remover, the things that go in between yours toes, cotton balls, moisturizing lotion).  And ring pops are FABULOUS!

Do you have any inside jokes that you can work into the gift?

  • When I was deployed I really enjoyed getting healthy snacks.   It's actually pretty difficult to get healthy stuff like good trail mix, dried fruit, and stuff like that downrange.   My sister would go to Trader Joes and stock up, then put everything into individual packs for me (easy to throw in a g-suit pocket or flight bag, or keep in your backpack for shifts that don't align with chow-hall times).

I also really liked trial sizes of high quality lotions, face wash, and fancy stuff like that (L'occitane, Philosphy, etc).  Same thing with mini-nail polish kits.  I definitely used them.  Smelly stuff is actually really nice to have in shared quarters because it keeps you from smelling some other girl's sweaty gym socks.   And the few times we had guys in our tent they always commented on how nice it smelled. So as long as she's not going on long marches out in the dessert, I think smelly stuff is probably fine.

Also, I just plain LOVED getting cards and mail of any kind.   So even a nice note would probably be really appreciated.  She's lucky she has a friend like you :-)

  • I'll have to ask H more of the specifics about what kind of environment she's in.  I think she's got it pretty nice, as in no large shared tent, no marches, etc.  She's part of the chair force :)  I'm guessing that when she's not flying she's in an office responding to demands of "I need a powerpoint NOW!!!"

Off to the mall.  There's a drugstore, sephora, VS, and occitane all next to each other.  Actually, there's a post office at the mall, too.

    image
  • No mini polish sets this time of year :(  I braved sephora to find out this tidbit.  That store scares me.  Or, rather, all the ladies with peacock eyeshadow scare me.

I said I was simply browsing, looking for a gift for a friend (a girlfriend? she asked.  for a special occasion? yep, deployment).  This "helpful" employee was suggesting things like bubble bath and basically the most expensive thing on every shelf.  Oh, and she was opening testers and shoving them under my nose to smell.  I'm extremely sensitive to smells.  Ugh.  Can I please shop unaccosted?

Got the ring pops, though :)

Were the b&bw socks the gel ones or the shea butter?  Do they actually work?

    image
  • Walmart tends to have mini nail polishes. And as far as the B&BW's socks the aloe ones work great! I bought them for my mom and she loved them. I think fantastic chocolates are in order as well. Godiva or Dove or something of the like.

A really nice bath towel and sheets would be lovely as well.
