japanese maple seedlings?

I am a lurker/occasional poster but I kow you guys have all the gardening answers :)

Our house is surrounded on 3 sides with woods.  Not thick deep woods, but enough that it is definitely woods.  I want to put some Japanese maples in, mostly just because I love them!  and maybe a dogwood.  The Japanese maples I would put on the edge and the dogwoods, since they are naturally lower than all the other trees, deeper in.

My question is, when is the idea time to plant seedlings? I feel like this is less critical because the Connecticut winter has been SO mild that the ground is not even frozen.  But I don't want to mess up right from the start!

I am going to buy from an online nursery that I trust (the catalog is at home, blanking on the name but open to other online nursery suggestions!), and I imagine they will be 6 inches or less.  So any tips would be a HUGE help!

Many thanks!!

Beth
