Not FM related: "All of a sudden" idiom

I just read _Olivia_ tell someone that the idiom is "all of a sudden" not "all of THE sudden" and I thought she was wrong, but I better google it before shooting my mouth off.

What do you know the idiom really is "all of a sudden"!  All these years I've been saying it incorrectly. Anyone else surprised?

  • NO - I have never heard anyone say 'All of the sudden'.

  • I assumed it was a typo on the original post... until I saw her use it again a little further down ... then I thought about it - rolled it over in my head a few times and decided she got it wrong ... and wondered how anyone would use "the" in that context ... then thought 'oh well' ... and LMAO when I read Olivia's gentle rebuke.
My darling daughter just turned 4 years old.

Is it really unclear which of these sentences makes no sense?

  • i have NEVER considered that it could be "all of the sudden." ?just doesn't make sense.

  • Now that we're talking about it, both versions sound positively ridiculous. But then so many words and phrases do when closely examined.
  • I think it's one of those phrases that your frequently hear, but rarely see written, so it's easy to get a few words mixed up.

Kind of like song lyrics. I always think "wrapped up like a douche" (rather then reved up like a deuce) even though it logically makes no sense.

  • It's not wrapped up like a douche??

All of THE sudden, that sounds isn't so cool anymore.

Yeah, I thought it was a sudden too. Never really thought about it though.
