I feel really hypocritical

I've always been quite vocal of my vendetta against tanning beds.

Pale skin is healthy skin blah blah.

Starting tomorrow I am going tanning for FSILs wedding because all the other bridesmaids are tanning and every self tanner I've tried (and I've tried about a thousand of them) look gross and unnatural with my skin. The dress is really short and I'm not about to put my pastey white legs out there for everyone to see.

Flame away, please.

Re: I feel really hypocritical

  • It's not worth it. They all know you enough to know what color you really are and the only thing goofier than pale legs are artificially colored legs. I mean, unless you want to increase your risk of melanoma as a wedding gift.

  • I can't flame.  I tanned last summer for our cruise.  I tanned the summer before that because I had just had a baby and was faaaaaaatt.

I'm seriously fighting the urge to tan daily because I am so pale and then I tell myself, hey self:  light therapy is legit and maybe you need some.  Plus, we can still bust out the shorts here, and when I wore some to the park with DH and DD the other day he was all, "ew your legs even look ashy they are so pale."

OK, I'm not going to lie.  With the exception of my time spent in the military, I have tanned every summer since I was 16.  But I'm trying to quit--hence why my legs are still pale.

This. I'm pale and tanned for years during HS and now I have a couple 'questionable spots' that they're looking more deeply into. I'm kicking myself in the ass for all those years that I wasted a lot of money and did that to my body.

Have you tried having someone airbrush tan you? I've had that done a couple times and some are definitely better than others, but that's what I do when I NEED to look tan for something.

There are UV-free therapies for seasonal affect disorder and mood issues. Tanning is for vanity.

I went and got professionally airbrush tanned in high school before a pageant. Looked superfuckingterrible and I was taking hot showers/scrubbing frantically for several days to try to fix it.

Have not been interested in trying again since.

  • What color is the dress you have to wear? Maybe you'll be the only normal looking person in the pictures if you don't tan.

Hahaha, ya I had an experience like that too, but I found a FABULOUS woman here. I look like a bad snooki for the first day (so I definitely stay inside) and then I look great for about a week and a half after.

Black with an "oasis" (aka teal. why can't it just be called teal?!) sash.

    This one, specifically.

  • I'm pale also.  I tanned for my cousin's wedding a few years ago.  It wasn't worth it because my tan color is still pretty light.  I am literally the only person in my family who can't tan at all.

  • I would just get airbrushed tanned right before the wedding.  It is more expensive then regular tanning and even spray tanning but it really works and doesn't give you streaks or weird tan lines.

  • Sorry about the dress.  It looks like it would make everyone have a poochy belly.

I'm going to vote spray tan, mystic style.  Just do it a couple days ahead so it fades somewhat.

  • I've been thinking about trying to get some color for a trip to cancun. I don't think I'd do a tanning bed, but like sit by the pool and read. I don't want (well I can't) get like crazy dark or anything, but I just thought I could try to get my legs the same color as my arms at least. So as a paleface McGee, I get you on this front

  • Because of my eye and hair color I just look really weird tan. When I was a lifeguard in my high school/college days I would get super dark from being outside all day every day all summer. By August I looked like an Oompa Loopa. Didn't matter that it was natural.

ETA: Interestingly enough, my sister, who is several shades lighter than I am naturally, looks great tan. She's allergic to UV light so she gets the mystic tan before every big event she goes to. Always looks great.

I think the mystic tans have improved a lot over the years. When we went to Punta Cana, I got airbrushed and it looked awesome. The only problem was when I looked at pictures from the trip, I got lighter as the days went on when in reality, spending time on the beach should make one darker. Oh well!

  • This summer I am a bridesmaid in my BILs wedding, so I am going to test a spray tan a little beforehand.  If it comes out like crap, I am going to a tanning bed.  I know it's unhealthy but the dress is key lime green. I will look ridiculous if I am pale in that color dress.

  • I did a walk-through of the tanning place today and they gave me a run down of which beds did what and which ones would work best for me and my crazy skin. I used this super awesome tanning bed that looks like a spaceship and guarantees I won't get sunburned! The plan I signed up for also comes with free spray tanning should I choose to go that route.

I've used one of those beds. They are NUTS and I felt like I was on fire for a good 10 minutes, but I didn't burn at all.

BTW, if you get a spray tan, make sure their base isn't orange. That's what I was told to ask by a tanning place. If it is, say "thanks, but no thanks". You definitely want a brown base.

On fire?! I was actually a little chilly since it had a bunch of fans built in! I'm sure there was a way to turn them down, but I didn't want to press a wrong button and fuuuck everything up lol.

  • Funny! Some people here are vain and want tan skin. I am vain because I don't want wrinkles and refuse to tan or even sit out in the sun casually (like during a picnic).  I don't even go to the pool!  Even if you don't care about the cancer risk (which doesn't make sense to me), think about the wrinkles and sunspots.  Not worth it for a second! Anyone who judges you on the color of your skin is not worth knowing.

  • I don't think just a few tanning sessions are going to kill you or give you cancer zomg.

ETA. I don't tan since I naturally have an olive tan skin tone but I do use Jergen's every now and then. I don't turn orange and it looks believable. Have you tried that?

  • I can't judge because I am currently tanning at my gym. But I did so much damage to my skin when I was little I don't see how this will increase the chances. My bio-mom never, never put sunscreen on me when i was a kid and I spent my youth on the beach in FL.

I've tried different types of lotion and spray tans and always look so weird.

Maybe not but how many times have you (general you) been outside and come back with burnt shoulders or nose because you were watching a baseball game or something? They all accumulate, it's not like you get a do-over just because the tan color fades. I've jacked my skin enough accidentally without needing to lay in a bed.

  • Try this stuff. For real. I turn orange if I look at a makeup that is too dark. I can't tan to save my life. This is the only stuff I've ever used that doesn't make me streaky or orange.I heard about it over on the H&F board, my mom and my friend Courtenay, plus myself all use it now. I love it because it gives me just enough color to keep me from being blinding but I don't look like an oompa loompa either. :D
