I am back from the States! And poll about going home...

I got back today and I really dont feel like unpacking or going out to buy some food.

I saw we had a lot of new IN babies. Anything else new?

Here is a small poll about going home.

On average how often do you go home?

If money or vacation time wasnt an issue, how often would you go home?

How many hours does it take to fly home?

How much does a ticket usually cost?

Re: I am back from the States! And poll about going home...

  • Oh, what a depressing poll!

Once a year at least. Because of this, we can't afford to go anywhere else, either.

Hmmm.... still once a year. Maybe twice. Maybe. Our families are crazy, so we appreciate the distance. And planes do fly both ways.

9 hours usually. Unless there is a strike or mechanical delay, which tends to happen to us a lot. So, 9-27 hours, depending. Bastards.

Augh. Augh. AUGH! Around ?750-900 pounds each. And now there are 4 of us. AUGH!

  • I hope you had a wonderful time at home! Did you get in some good shopping?  Food?  And of course, I hope you had a wonderful time with family and friends!

I don't know about new things here on the board- since I just got home with one of the new IN babies, this is my first day back on the board :)

But your poll is cool, I'm interested in the results!

How often do you go home?  I go home about twice a year, summers and Christmas.  I am so excited not to be working, so that I can go home at different times this year- I'm especially excited for Thanksgiving!

If money or vacation time wasn't an issue- I would go home probably 3 or 4 times a year, or I would just stay home for 2 months at a time.

How many hours does it take to fly home?  My family is right outside of NYC, so it takes about 7 hours to fly home, and then another hour from the airport to Dad's houses.  Not too bad.  I also only fly direct now, usually out of Frankfurt, which adds another 2 hours to get to the airport, but I HATE layovers, and feel like I'm too old for them now :)

How much does a ticket usually cost?  Well, since I go home at choice times, I haven't flown home for under 1,000 Euro per ticket in a few years.

  • Welcome back! Hope you had fun, I'm jealous!

On average how often do you go home? Once a year.

If money or vacation time wasnt an issue, how often would you go home? At Christmas and over the summer. Maybe in October too, because I really love fall in New England.

How many hours does it take to fly home? An hour to Madrid, then usually four hour layover, then 6 hours to Boston. (Then 2 hrs. Boston to home)

How much does a ticket usually cost? Somewhere around a thousand euros.

  • I had a great time. I gained a couple of pounds so I guess I am glad to be back. It doesnt help that I ate a lot of Mac and Cheese and ate out almost every day. I bought a lot of new clothes so I am happy about that since I almost never go shopping here.

I usually go home once or twice a year. The important thing is that I get to see my family at least twice during the year. I am not a big fan of flying so I wish my parents can come here at least once a year but they usually come every two years

It takes about 10 hours to get home.

And the ticket is about 750 euros.

  • On average how often do you go home? I go two times a year, for two weeks at a pop,

If money or vacation time wasnt an issue, how often would you go home? I would probably keep it at 2, but add an additional week.

How many hours does it take to fly home? 9 hours unless we have to refuel in Gandor.

How much does a ticket usually cost? Free (well, $30 per person for meals).  But if we had to pay for our flights, $2,000 per person.

I would only go back ONCE a year at that rate, but make it at least a month.

  • It really depends.  Last year I went home 3 times with wedding stuff.  I haven't been home since the wedding which was 7 months ago and we might go in April.  So I guess on average 1-2 times per year.

I guess maybe 2 times per year if money was no object.  IDK, it would depend on what was going on, I would go back for events more often I think.  I have missed weddings and such.

It takes 8 hours to get there in the air and 5.5 to get back, jet stream.

EDIT- I didn't answer the price.  It depends I'm a teacher so I have to fly at high price times. I usually pay anywhere between ?400-700 direct London to Philadelphia. I can get amazing deals or really bad ones it really depends.

  • Well, for the year+ that we've been in SA, I've gone back twice a year to mine and once a year to DH's fam (he does the reverse). And this coming year both my brother and sister are getting married and DH's brother just got engaged and is thinking of a wedding next year as well. Lots of traveling to do...

If money was no object, we'd probably be doing the same thing, and we make the trips last, though now that I'll be working full time I won't be able to go for as long :(.

The trip always takes around 40+ hours because there is NO direct way to fly from Cape Town. Ever.

ETA: Oh, and for cost...we haven't paid more than $1500 yet. Plus I just used my miles for one way home. That helps. DH usually lands a conference in Europe or the US to pay for his tickets.

  • How often do you go home? I usually go home twice a year (summer and christmas time...I'm going home next week for a month)

If money or vacation time wasn't an issue- I would probably go home 3-4 a year.

How many hours does it take to fly home? Around 10-15 hours, depending on the number of layovers. If I have a direct flight from Geneva to the US, its usually 9 hours to the US then 2 hours to St.Louis. If I need to connect somewhere in Europe and somewhere in the US, it can be around 14 or 15 hours.

How much does a ticket usually cost?  Usually around $1,000. I always buy on Orbitz and pay in US dollar.

  • Welcome back! Hope you had a great trip!

Last year we went home 3 times. We went in February to show off the baby, we went in July to see other relatives/family reunion and we went in November for a wedding/Thanksgiving. This year, we will probably go home twice - summer and winter, although my DH has a work trip scheduled in April (and I won't go... boo!).

If we had unlimited time/money, we would probably go about what we did this year. We might stay longer though. Vacation time for us is the issue and also DH can't be in the US too long because of tax issues. Traveling with a kid, it is nice to make the trip long enough for all the effort and pain of doing jet lag.

The flight from here to LAX is 11 hours, and we fly straight. Coming back though, we have been coming back from Denver where my parents live, so we have one connection making it a 2 hour flight, a 3-4 hour layover and then a 6-7 hour flight. Door to door its about 18-19 hours for either trip. Long!

Tickets.... I don't know! We've gotten lucky. DH's work paid for one of his, we've used airline miles for two of mine. Also the ILs have helped pay for them. Probably $1000, and this year we will have to buy 3 tickets!

  • I've been out of the country for 8 months, and this is my second trip back home, and we have another trip planned in April.   Ordinarily I don't think we'd go home that often....once or twice a year MAX.  I'm hoping next year people will come visit US more.

    1.   How often?  Once or twice  a year, I'm thinking

    2.  Money not an issue?  Still probably twice a year max.

    3.  It's about an 8 hour flight if I can go direct, but depending on where I fly into and how far I have to drive to get to the airports, it amounts to about 20 hours of travel (ouch!)

    4.  How much for a ticket?  Again, depends on the itinerary, but usually between $700 - $1200.

  • Um... ctgirl, I was thinking of you and wondering why you hadn't posted lately (or maybe I just missed it)... you had your baby?!! Congratulations! I completely missed your post.

    Now for the poll:

I used to go twice a year, but now with DD it will probably go down to max 1x / year or for special occasions (my brother will probably be getting married in the not too distant future)

If money, vacation, or splitting xmas time with ILs weren't issues, I would go twice a year, once in the summer and once for xmas.

    Depends - from door to door usually between 18-20 hours, but it's either 3hr drive - 9 hr flight - 3 hr drive or 30min - 9 hr - 30min flights.

I used to have a goal of under 600? pp and nearly always made it. Now taxes have gone up and my goal is under 700? pp, but I don't always make the cut. Sigh. Thankfully my parents often chip in.

  • On average how often do you go home? Maybe once a year to DH's home (NYC).  Haven't been to my home in 2 years (Newfoundland).

If money or vacation time wasnt an issue, how often would you go home? We'd probably go 2x to NYC and 1x to Newfoundland

How many hours does it take to fly home? 7-8 hours to NYC, and ~5 to Newfoundland direct (or 10+ in the half the year the direct flight isn't available)

How much does a ticket usually cost? I haven't priced anything in ages, but I think you can get decent flights from London to NYC for $5-800.  The direct flight to Newfoundland is about $1000.

  • We go home about twice a year.

Unlimited money and vacation time.... We'd still go home 1-2 times a year. Overseas is temporary for us and there is so much to explore from here.

Getting home is a 1 hour flight to Dubai, layover varying 3-12 hours, 16 hour flight to San Francisco, then a 2-3 hour drive.

Right now a round-trip ticket costs around $1,400 per person. ::ouch, ouch, ouch!::

  • On average how often do you go home? First of all I consider my move here permananet (Immigration allowing, lol) so I AM home. But as for flying back to the States, I haven't yet.

If money or vacation time wasnt an issue, how often would you go home? I think I'd like to visit the States once a year if I could.

How many hours does it take to fly home? Actual flight time is about 25 hours but it often takes 36 with layovers.

How much does a ticket usually cost? $1500 for the cheap seats.

  • Going home on average?  About once a year, sometimes a bit longer.

If money or vacation time wasn't an issue?  same

how many hours: to get to LHR-3 hours and then a 7 hour flight

How much does the ticket cost about ?500.  last visit was from Korea and we had to fly on a friends buddy pass, cause we just couldn't afford it otherwise.

  • I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday!

    I like this poll :)

We go home on average of 1/year.

If money/vacation time wasn't an issue, I would like to think that we would go home about 3/year.

It is a 1 hour ferry ride to Hong Kong, then a 14 hour direct flight from Hong Kong to home.  The entire door to door experience takes about 24 hours. At least, time-wise, we usually land before we take off :)  Gotta love a 16 hour time difference!

Tickets are usually $1300 CDN each.

Here is a small poll about going home.

On average how often do you go home? Twice a year (I have only been here for 8 months so we will see if that continues)

If money or vacation time wasnt an issue, how often would you go home? (maybe every 3 months)

How many hours does it take to fly home? 8+ depending on what connections we take

How much does a ticket usually cost? DH's company pays for once a year in business class...$3k each.  We usually pay for one trip in coach at $600-1000 each depending on what time of the year we go home.

Here is a small poll about going home.

On average how often do you go home? Well, we're in my home country now so its how often we go back to see DH's family. Sadly, we've only been one time since we moved here in 2008 and that was for Christmas 2009. His parents have been here a number of times and his brother and sister both at least once as well. We are planning to go back June 2012 to coincide with BIL's graduation ceremony, he's getting his masters in architecture. His parents will be here in May for DH's MBA graduation.

If money or vacation time wasnt an issue, how often would you go home? Much more often, at least twice a year.

How many hours does it take to fly home? Just to fly 5-7 depending on which way you're headed. But add in the time to and from the airports and it jumps considerably.

How much does a ticket usually cost? For one person, between $500-1000 depending on sales and time of year and how far out we have notice about booking.

  • *sigh* always a tricky subject.

I go home generally once a year, in the summer.

if I could I'd go home twice and stay longer than I do now. The SO and I are currently long-distance between two countries so my spare time/money is generally spent going to visit him.

Flight is 5 hours, then 1.5-2.5 hours ground transportation depending on which house I go to.

My last ticket cost 100000ISK (about ?750 or so) . Pretty steep but Icelandair's got a pretty captive audience. I'm looking forward to moving to Germany where there'll be more ticket options.

  • I'm a lurker but want to join in this one! For me Home is Ireland and I'm permanently in the US.

I've been home once a year, for a week, in the cheap season (Jan/Feb) since I moved here but that means we can't afford actual vacation. So this might be the first year I don't. (but I'm pretty sure I'll get drunk some night and buy a ticket!)

Money and Vacation excepting - Probably still once a year but with my husband (he's only been back once because of money). I'd also try to make it to more events (I've missed weddings, christenings, family gatherings). I'd also start taking real vacations again, and maybe paying for people to come here.

We drive 4 hours to OHare and the it's 6-8 hours.

I've flown in the cheap season for $600-800.
