S/O Dumb People/Questions

I was thinking to come back and post this, but Dehko sort of beat me out.

Lets all post our profession and the absolute DUMBEST question(s)/statement(s) we've ever been asked/told related to it.  I could use a good laugh, and I'm sure others could as well.

Re: S/O Dumb People/Questions

  • I used to do Environmental Consulting.  Mainly hazardous materials (lead paint, asbestos, mold) testing and reporting.

While 7 months pregnant I had a client's tenant (commercial real estate) who was insisting that mold caused a birth defect.  The client's tenant kept telling me that I was doing damage to my baby by taking pictures of the mold.

While doing lead paint training for a government facility, I had somebody look at me and say, dead serious, "So I should stop eating the paint chips?" I don't think they were kidding.

  • "A deer ran into my car. Can I sue the deer?"

  • That is HILARIOUS.

I've had several Defendants who think they know the law better than I do, so they don't really ask me questions as much as say ridiculous things in Court.

One gentleman said he wasn't criminally liable because he never signed a valid contract with the United States that he had to follow the laws. Only corporate entities do that.

    Indifferent *Blink, blink*

    Sure buddy.

  • DH and I met while working at our on campus Apple retailer.  A man called us the day after receiving his new iMac and proceeded to biitch me out because I sold him a computer and "it doesn't even have WINDOWS on it for christsake!"  *blink....ummmm....*  You bought a MAC, homeboy, it runs OSX.

A janitor at the school I worked at pre-Natalie told me while I was pregnant with her that I wouldn't be able to breastfeed unless I drank milk.

  • I'm an attorney.  Before, when I was in private practice I told someone that I worked for a law firm doing criminal law.  They then proceeded to ask me if I did prosecution or defense.  Only the government can charge people criminally.  Private attorneys don't put people in jail (unless they're inept and eff over their client).

Recently, I seem to get all of the whackos. Crazy conspiracy theories.  And my favorite - I admit that I broke the law and defrauded people, but if you prevent me from defrauding other people how am I ever going to be able to repay the first people?

  • I had a client once beg me not to send her to the hospital for experiencing paranoid thoughts after she decided that people broke into her house and stole her cell phone. Yes, only her cell phone, nothing but her cell phone - which she found a few days later - and continued to c/o paranoid thoughts..... She is, actually, diagnosed with Dependent Personality Disorder Stick out tongue

  • It is for this reason that I don't work with the general public, lol.

The things DH tells me would fill a book and I just don't understand how he can handle it all and still smile.

I certainly get dumb questions from colleagues but it's not the same.

Oh, and there are about 12 things wrong with this sentence.  I exaggerate only slightly.  Why would a janitor delve into something so absolutely none of his or her business?  And being so incorrect about it....sorry, I couldn't help but giggle.

You should have told him/her that their mop wouldn't work unless they drank water ,P

  • I have a very short term memory and can't remember specific examples, but let me tell you, I do get some questions, I just can't remember examples when asked :(

  • Not full-on work related, but the worst question that I've ever had from a student was "Do you have a job?"  Ummmm yeah, what do you think I'm doing standing up here in front of you all day kiddo?  The rest of the class never let her forget that one....

A runner-up would be the kid who looked incredibly confused during a lesson on Gandhi, and then raised his hand halfway through and said "Wait a minute, I thought Gandhi was a deer.... how did he do all this other stuff?!!?"  Luckily another kid in the class pointed out that it was Bambi not Gandhi, so I didn't even have to touch that one.
