pregnant runners past and present

I have been really discouraged with my running so far this week. It was the biggest struggle to barely jog 3 miles on the treadmill last night. I had a couple great runs over the weekend, and felt like I could have run 10 on Saturday.

I guess I just wanted to hear if you had stretches of good days and bad days. I know we all have them pregnant or not, but wow - I have never felt this discouraged. I am going to switch it up and run outside tonight to see if it helps.

Re: pregnant runners past and present

  • With my last pregnancy I went from a perfectly fine 3 mile run, to feeling awful after just 1 week later.  That was at 24w with a single and I decided my body was telling me it was enough. After my previous experience I'm more of a play it safe kinda girl now.  You're carrying twins so I'm not surprised that you are having difficulties now, and actually after seeing/hearing my friend go through a twin pregnancy in this last year I'm surprised you are running and allowed to run at this point.

  • I have had my fair share of bad runs!!  In fact, I was beginning to think that there was no hope for me to run fast.  Then last week I ran a 10K on Thursday (actually 6.37 miles) at a 7:37 pace and ran a little over 10 miles on Saturday at an 8:14 pace. I am completely satisfied with both of those runs!

Then this morning I ran 6 miles on the treadmill... at slow 9:01 pace!

I am definitely treading cautiously. I've had a bit of a runaround with my care so far - I had been seeing a midwife, but once we found out it was twins I made an appointment with my OB, which isn't until next Thursday. I have about 1 million questions for her. So far, I've been feeling great. This week I've felt a lot more tired. I think the babies are growing and sapping my energy :)

  • I definitely had good days and bad days.  You're doing great! (And don't be too hard on yourself...carrying twins sounds so tough!)

  • I've been having good days and bad days lately. Sometimes I have to pee like crazy the entire time and it's really uncomfortable and other times I'm fine (due to the way baby is positioned I'm guessing). I am struggling with choosing the right pace on the treadmill. I hate going slower, but most of the time here lately it's the only way I can complete a run! I hate the treadmill in general, but it's getting cold outside here and I have outgrown most of my cold-weather running gear :-/

I'd say keep up the good work, running through your 1st Tri is an accomplishment in itself!! Hopefully your new OB is supportive of your running if he or she feels it is safe to continue with a twin pregnancy.

  • Thanks ladies. I am really happy I've been able to do what I have so far.

I've also been very lucky in terms of how I've felt and am feeling considering twins. No m/s, and up until recently very little fatigue.

  • I definitely had good and bad days. I ran much more slowly than pre-pregnancy. I still ran quite a bit through the 2nd trimester, including a half-marathon and two ten-mile races in months 5 and 6. I dialed it way back after that though, because I got increasingly uncomfortable. And I only had a singleton pregnancy, so I wouldn't be surprised if you feel exhausted and uncomfortable well before I did.

  • one of the nice things about being pregnant is that you get to cut yourself some slack!! you WILL get slower and your runs WILL get shorter. that is how it is.  you are going to need to slow down to keep your HR low and eh, if slow = walk, then so be it.  just enjoy being a pregnant runner, its such a special thing.  i loved it so much.

the only thing that has been better is being a double-stroller-pushing runner.  these phases are so short, so just savor it even if it means just one very slow mile.

Ditto.   There are still some moments when I remember  my pregnancy runs, and think, "Wow, it was awesome that I was even out there!".

This is so true! I know I will look back on it and will be proud. I'm strangely excited for the double stroller :)

  • I've definitely had some good days and then some bad days.  There have been a few runs where my HR just shot up very quickly and would not come down.  I could only manage a few miles and then moved to the ellipitcal.  A few days later it would be better.  Just keep listening to your body.

  • I was up and down throughout the first and second trimesters. I'd have a few bad runs, followed by a good one. The one good one here and there made it seem worth it. Since I hit 30w, I have had only a handful of good runs. I have had some awesome walks though. It is nice to let myself off the hook a bit.

  • Yes, there were good and bad days. But I still managed to run all the way up to 39 weeks. I just didn't beat myself up for the days I could only run 2 and half miles at most, as long as I was out there moving that's all that mattered to me. And then on the days where I ran +4 and at a great pace, I felt great! That made all of the other shitty runs totally worth it to me!
