Race question - if you go alone

What do you do with your stuff? Your car keys, driver's license, etc.? The only race I've done so far was with my DH, who held our stuff (and to be honest, I was so excited that I don't remember what he did with the car keys - I feel like he ran with them around his neck, which sounds super uncomfortable to me.) I was supposed to go to my 5k this Sunday with a friend who was going to drive (and then I really wouldn't need to bring anything) but she can't run (doctor's orders) and my DH has plans for the morning, so I'll be going to this one alone. So, what do I do? The 5k is a decent distance away, so I need to bring my wallet (or at least my driver's license and health insurance card, God forbid of anything), my phone (which, if it came down to it, I could use as my iPod, so I'd have less stuff to carry), and car/house keys. Any suggestions?

  • My spibelt.

  • I would leave as much as I could in the car - and just carry the car key. Do any of your running clothes have a little pocket, or you could just tie it to your shoelace.

No pockets. But I do have one of those shoe pocket things I could put the keys in.

  • Most of my races have been alone. I always carry my iPhone on my armband in case of an emergency.  Everything else I keep in my car, and if I'm comfortable with the area I don't lock my doors, so I keep my keys there too (yay for small-town races).

  • I do almost all my races without DH or anyone to hold my stuff. I leave everything in the car. I take my car key off the ring and tie it onto my shoe. I used to have an ipod classic that I used with an armband. I would put my license, key, etc in the armband. I now have a shuffle, so I just forgo carrying anything but my key.
  • I go to 95% of my races alone, so I usually just lock all my stuff in the car except my car key.  I either put that in the little pocket in my shorts, or I'll lace it through my shoe laces if I don't have a pocket.
  • I've been to most of my races alone too. Before I got my spibelt (best thing ever), I would only take my key and leave everything else in the car. If my clothing has a pocket, I'd put it there, but before I owned any of that, I tied it on my shoe lace. :)

  • Lock everything in the car and put the key in the gas cap.

  • Leave everything but the bare necessities in the car, and use a spibelt. I got my at my local running store. Best thing ever.

  • I almost always race with DH, we have a valet key that he puts in his running shorts.  Before we were married I would saftey pin my key to my shorts if I didn't have pockets.
  • I don't usually go alone, but I have gone to races where we were both racing -- so same net effect.  Car key tied to the shoelace, and everything in the car.  It just takes getting there a little earlier and being a little better prepared.

Do you worry about losing the key?  For some reason this freaks me out.

  • I don't drive (like, at all...welcome to NYC), but the races I run here have baggage check areas so I bring a small bag of stuff I absolutely need when I'm heading to the race and bring them to the baggage area. I also have a wrist pocket-thingie (sorry, don't know what else to call them) where I put things I don't want to lose if my bag gets lost/stolen (Metrocard, debit card, license and keys). If my shorts/pants have pockets then I'll stick things in there too.

  • Before getting a shirt with a small zipper pocket, I was running with my key to my car around my neck. Believe it or not I never felt it - and I ran it down my sports bra between my breasts.

I tend to leave everything else in the car.

  • I leave everything in my car and just put my phone and car key in my Spibelt.

I used to do this all the time. I have never lost it. I undo one lace at the top, put it through, re-lace, then double knot. Then I tuck the key into the laces so it doesn't flop around.

Ditto, I put my keys, phone and DL in there.  I don't carry anything else.

I do the exact same thing and have never had an issue with losing the key or it flapping around.

  • I take my car/house key off the keyring and tie it to my shoe.  I don't like putting it in my spibelt because I put gu/chomps, chapstick in there and don't want to worry about losing my key on the course.

full wallet stays at home or gets locked in the car.

I put my ID, metrocard, and debit card in the back pocket of my nike pacer shorts or tights/capris. I only buy tights/capris with a back pocket for this very reason.

    this.

  • Tie your key to your shoe and leave the rest hidden in the car.

If it's really cold, wear a throw-away shirt. Otherwise leave it in the car as well, and just shiver it out for a few minutes until the race starts.

Good luck and have a great race!

  • I wear an armband for my iPhone and I slip my key right in the back (in between the phone and the sleeve).  I'll put my ID in there as well if I'm checking in a bit late and couldn't pick up my bib at an expo or local running store before the race.

I've brought my spike bag and asked a vendor at the post race events if I can hide my stuff behind their tables. They always say yes, and I feel like it's pretty safe hidden behind a table.

  • I put everything in the car and tie just my one car key to my shoelace. I do this for regular runs as well when I drive somewhere to run

  • I usually safety pin my car key to my shorts and leave everything else in the car (out of sight).

  • Thanks for all the advice, ladies! I'm not comfortable with leaving my car unlocked, but I'll put the key through my laces (and then look for some shorts/pants with pockets for the future, ha) and leave everything else in my car. The belt just sounds a little uncomfortable to me - I hate the feeling of anything on me (except clothes) while I'm running.

  • I just carry them in my hands while I run.  I usually run with my tune belt and it's got a pocket on the back of it for cards and whatnot.  So I just shove the card in there.  I'm very paranoid about putting my keys anywhere because my house key somehow managed to disappear off my keyring one day and I didn't realize it until I got home.
  • Do you have shorts or pants with a zippered pocket?  I normally just put my stuff in my trunk and take my car key off the keychain and stick in my pocket.
