A little sad

I just found out that my childhood neighbor passed away. He was 90 and lived a really good life, but it still made my cry to read his obituary. He and his wife were like grandparents to me when I was growing up. Both of their sons were well into their 30s before they had children, so they didn't have any grandchildren until they were much older than they would've liked and I was like a surrogate. I stayed with them sometimes when I was home sick from school and I'll never forget how he brought me ice cream the day I had my tonsils out. I haven't spoken with him or his wife in probably 10 years, but I'm still pretty upset about his passing and my heart is breaking for his wife. :(

Re: A little sad

  • My condolences...it sounds like he left a very special spot in your heart.

You should write a note to his wife and share that happy memory of him. I am sure she would find comfort in your thoughtfulness.

I was just thinking the same thing. I'm probably not going to be able to go to the wake tomorrow night, but I plan on getting a card to send to his wife.

  • I'm really sorry. It's nice to know for his sake that he did get you as a great neighbor and quasi-grandchild!! I am sure his wife would love a note with some memories you have of him. So sorry though.
  • A couple years ago, a childhood neighbor I had the same sort of relationship with took her own life.  It was really heartbreaking.

I think the idea of a sweet note, and maybe even some flowers, to the widow is a really good idea.  I think it really brightens the day of someone who loses a loved one knowing they touched another in a positive way.

    Anniversary
  • My sympathies are with you, Beth.  :(
