WIJFR: Wither (spoilers)

I liked it. Didn't love it, but it was good.

I'm still weirded out by polygamy and even more so that these girls were 13 (really? EW!), 16 and 19.

I liked Jenna. She really didn't have much time left so what did she care. I liked that she held her love and didn't share herself with Linden emotionally.

Cecily annoyed me to no end, but because she was so young I actually felt bad for her. She was told it would be a better life and she believed everything. I'm glad she was the one left with Linded, I just hope she is able to be happy and healthy.

Rhine. I loved her strength. Even though she was falling for Linden, she held true. I truly hope that Gabriel and her find Rowen and fight. I think because of her eyes there has to be something special about her. Maybe SHE is the cure?

I'll likely read the next one just to know what happens.

Re: WIJFR: Wither (spoilers)

  • I loved Wither!  The polygamy and young ages didn't really bother me at all.  I think I would have been more bothered by middle aged characters and polygamy, IDK why.  I think it's going to be end up being a great series.

I think Rhine is a great character.  I don't often get gushy about strong female characters, but she really is the whole package.

  • Rhine was great for sure. I hope she fights like hell in the next book and gets back to her brother. I'd be so sad if she couldn't find him again.
  • While polygamy in general freaks me the eff out, I did enjoy the relationship between the 3 girls. I liked to see how they bonded in the face of such a weird situation.

  • I think they had to bond in order to keep themselves somewhat sane. I liked that they helped each other. Cecily helped in her own way, even though is screwed things up, but at least she redeemed herself when she finally understood.
  • I also liked it, but didn't love it.

I never felt the romance between Rhine and Gabriel. I know that they didn't get to see each other much, but I felt it was a huge leap for me to believe that they were in love.

but before I can live with other folks I've got to live with myself. The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is a person's conscience. [/center]

I don't feel like they were, but I didn't feel like I was supposed to think they were. I think they were both desperate for an esacpe from their situation and saw each other as that escape, which they interpreted as love.

I picture them leaving the compound as that end scene in The Graduate. Like Ooookay, what now?

I didn't get the impression that Gabriel wanted to leave at all until Rhine told him she was. He didn't know the outside at all.

I agree. There was a line in the book that was something like - I just want the freedom to figure out on my own what my feelings would be. So I never got the impression that they were supposed to be in love either.

I liked it but I didn't think that the world she created was done well at all. The whole rest of the world fell into the ocean but America, especially the island of Manhattan, was totally fine? I thought she took a lot of extreme liberties with believability. Not just that, the fishing and contamination of oceans, the products that they use that they shouldn't be able to with no more imports, etc.

Also I thought the whole time that it was going to come out that Vaughn impregnated Cecily. Something was going on with them and Cecily never confirmed sleeping with Linden.
