Lisbon, Portugal recs & is 5 nights too many?

Okay I am having some friends visit me here in Barcelona.  They would like to go to Madrid and Lisbon.  I have already been to Madrid so I am good there.  Lisbon, I have no idea.  First, I am hoping for a hotel recommendation.  Second, they were thinking of traveling from Madrid to Libon on Wednesday staying there until Monday morning...is that too much time?  I am not sure what there even is to do in Lisbon.

Re: Lisbon, Portugal recs & is 5 nights too many?

  • I love the Lisbon area. Have you considered maybe spending 2 nights in Sintra or Cascais for something different?
  • We actually leave Friday for 3 nights in Lisbon (and then are going on to Spain for 2 weeks), and even though it irritates me when people post before they've gone on their trip, I'm doing it anyway.  Here's a link to a question I asked recently about Lisbon that had some good info in it:  http://community.thenest.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/56916551.aspx

I'm actually having a really hard time making everything work in 2.5 days of sightseeing.  As a result we're actually taking a one day tour to see the highlights.  There are also a number of options for day trips outside of Lisbon if that was their cuppa tea.

Anyway, in summary, I think 3 full days in Lisbon (including a day trip to Sintra) is just about right.  A 4th day/ 5th night could be spent on an additional day trip or would allow for a more leisurely pace.

  •  What's your budget for a place to stay?  Lisbon has some AMAZING hostels that are highly rated!  I know people hear hostel and they think no privacy, dirty, bugs, etc.  However, that's not always true.

Ditto PP, I would go to Sintra for one of the days.  Make sure to go up to the palace for some amazing views.

Lisbon has plenty of things to do:

Go to a Fado show, take a historic ride on the #28 trolley (just watch out for pick-pockets), indulge in things like Port wine, Ginja, bacalo (I like when the cod fish is in a "casserole" style), pasteis de nata (custard pastry) from Belem. Then, get lost in the oldest neighborhood, Alfama and check out the Castelo de Sao Jorge.  Belem has plenty of sites and history as well.  The list can go on...

Personally, I think Lisbon is very under-rated for a Western European city.

  • I spent three nights and 2.5 days in Lisbon a few years ago, and would have gladly spent a few more days/nights there.  If your friends get bored, they can always go to Sintra or other places on the coast as day trips.

  • I definitely agree with taking a day trip out to Sintra. We stopped in Lisbon on a cruise and we took a trip out to Sintra & Cascais and absolutely loved it. Sintra is just so much fun to walk around. I found all kinds of fun little trinkets! Love it.

  • I was in Lisbon with only 2.5 days and I also wished I had more time.  Go crazy one night on Barrio Alto and you'll spend on day just sleeping in.  Stroll around, drink Vino Verde (a Portugese white wine), and definitely go to Sintra/Cascais for the day.

  • Lisbon was honestly one of my favourite cities I've been to in Europe, it's lovely to walk around and there are tons of different areas. We spent a full day in Sintra and there are tons of other day trips you can do in the area. We were there 2 nights and easily could have stayed longer.
