Shot for dogs before they drink lake water??

Anyone heard of this/know anything about it??

We have a cabin on a lake where we spend pretty much every wknd in the summer. Cooper LOVES the lake, but he drinks a ton of lake water. We've never had any problems in the past w/him getting sick or anything, but DH just said something right now about hearing about some shot & I'd never heard of it!!

Anyone else??

TIA!

Cooper age 8, Taylor age 14

  • Never heard of anything like that. Is it to prevent giardia (sp?)

    ::Shrugs:: I dunno!

    Perhaps I should do some of my own research online Hmm haha!

    Edit: ok, it appears as though the most concern is over water that is stagnant, not moving....

  • It's possible he is thinking of the vaccine for lepto.  It is often transmitted by water that wildlife could be urinating in.

  • A lot of lakes and rivers are getting toxic blooms of blue green algea right now. If dogs drink water that has these toxins in it they most likely will die. There is no shot, no cure. Its best to search the internet about safety postings on the body of water you are going to. Park services usually will post warnings.

    This. My vet includes it standard in their puppy vaccination schedule now.

  • Our vet recommends the lepto vaccine if the dogs go camping or will be drinking from streams/lakes.
