To Marathon or Not...

I can't make up my mind!!

There's a marathon (Grandma's in Duluth, MN) on a weekend in late June that I'm seriously considering, but I'm scared!

I'm running the Fargo Half-Marathon in May, and it fits perfectly into the weekly training - it falls on a 14 mile day, if I followed Hal's Novice 1 plan. This will be my second half, but I've ran a few shorter races as well.

I just can't decide. I think the challenge would be awesome, and it would be such an amazing accomplishment! Plus training in the Spring would be much better than training through the Summer for a Fall marathon or through the Winter for an early Spring Marathon.

Thoughts? Advice?

Re: To Marathon or Not...

  • I heard the Grandma's is a fun race! I say go for it!
  • DO IT!

Sounds like you've listed all the pros.  Do you have any cons?  How much is the registration?  You can always register, and then if training doesn't go as planned for some reason, just don't do it.  Sounds like perfect timing though!

I think the cons are just me being a bit unsure of myself. I'm not a super fast runner - like 10:30-11 min miles are comfortable - so I just worry I'm not going to be able to do it.

But really, I think I could do it if I set my mind to it. Costs aren't really an issue since we were planning to go on a little vacation to the Twin Cities that weekend, anyway. I'd just feel bad signing up and then not following through.

  • Join me!!  Smile  I think you should do it! I haven't done it before, but I've heard it's a fun race to do (and mostly downhill!)
  • I have done 2 half marathons and am 3 weeks away from my first marathon!! eek.  I would say go for it.  However, I liked training in the winter.  I don't think I could do a 20 mile training run when it was hot out.  I prefer cooler weather running though.

I followed Hal Higdon novice too.  I actually enjoyed training.  I hated training for the half marathons.  I am not sure what was different this time, but I am excited for the marathon.

  • DO IT!  This year will be my third Grandma's plus I've run the half marathon there half a dozen times.  It's an easy course, really only one big hill, and the scenery is amazing!  Grandma's has been a yearly event for my extended family for 30 years.
  • Thanks everyone :)

I just registered!! I can't believe it.. I feel a bit sick, but so excited. I CAN do it!

That puts you well below the typical course time limits. With a good training plan, you'll be just fine. Good luck & have fun!

  • I think you can definitely do it! Glad youv'e signed up Yes I had the same debate with myself about the Fargo Marathon, and now I'm committed to training ... even though I still have to actually register...

If any of you are looking for helpful feedback on this, I did a blog post a while back on "To Marathon or Not To Marathon" and got a lot of good feedback, including plenty from H&Fers.

  • It's a marathon, not a sprint!  You will be fine with 10:30-11min miles!  Congrats on registering, good luck!
