Ruby could use your thoughts and prayers.

Ruby failed her newborn hearing screen several times, so we had to go back for a re-screen at Children's today.  After multiple tries, she still failed.  The audiologist ran several other tests and at this point, there's no fluid or wax in the ear and it appears there's something fundamentally wrong with her ability to hear on that side.  She said it's unclear whether it's structural or sensorineural and that she couldn't rule anything out at this point.  Ruby's been referred to an ENT and she has an appointment next month, so hopefully we'll know more then.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed and praying that whatever it is is easily correctable (or, better yet, it turns out to be nothing at all).

In the realm of all the things that can go wrong, we're thankful this seems pretty minor, but it's still scary to think that there may be something that causes difficulties for our child.

If you have T&Ps to spare, we'd appreciate it.

Re: Ruby could use your thoughts and prayers.

  • Are you freaking out? You seem so calm in your post, this is a good thing.

Def t/p's for sure. I hope its just a leftover fluke from her ear infection or something. But, at least its one side and not both sides, right? Maybe it will just work itself out as she gets older, maybe something isnt connecting right yet.

  • I will keep my fingers crossed that it is nothing!! Ruby, you, and the rest of the family are in my prayers!!!

I'm trying not to.  At first, I figured "WTF is the big deal?  She only NEEDS one ear, right?" but from what the doc said and what I've been reading, being able to hear properly early on is fundamental in language development.  I guess that's why they do the newborn hearing screen -- to try and be proactive and get the kids help before it's too late.  So, yeah...I'm starting to freak a little.  I just don't want her to have to deal with any hurdles.  You just don't want your kids to have anything "wrong" with them, ya know?  And, selfishly, I'm freaking about the financial aspect.  The past year has SUCKED for us in that aspect and we're having a really tough time as it is.  To add more specialist bills and Lord knows what else (surgeries?  hearing aid?) makes me want to vomit.

  • Thoughts and prayers being sent that it's just a fluke, but if it truly is something, catching it so soon is key. There's so much they can do, but hoping that there doesn't need to be anything done. Keep us updated on Miss Ruby. You're right. Nobody wants to think that there's anything "wrong" with their baby.

  • T&P's sent.  So sorry you guys have to worry about this right now.  Last thing a teeny tiny babe needs is for mom and dad to worry.  Keep us updated
  • Thiat really stinks, poor Ruby! Glad you guys went in to get it rechecked. Hopefully it turns out to be nothing or at least something that is correctable over time. I had a guy in my class in hs that only could hear with one ear and it was tough sometimes trying to talk to him if you were on the bad side. He always had to turn his good ear to you. I'll be praying both ears work out perfectly!

  • Aw Jess. Lots of prayers for little Ruby. No mama wants anything in their baby's life that is going to make things more difficult than growing up already can be.
