$$&(%^#@[email protected] MOLD!

So, I live in the wet tropics of hell and tonight have found that, along with wallets, belts, shoes, passports, etc, now the clothes in the closet have mold growing on them!  These were clean clothes!

We were running the dehumidify function on the A/C at night, but it was drying the hiouse out to the point that I as waking up with severe asthma attacks (as in call the ambulance and a trip to the ER). So we had to switch to running it for an hour or two to get the bedding to dry out enough for us to sleep.

Any idea how to combat this?  Other than divorce/leaving him to this hell on his own?  If you saw how "fuzzy" my Coach leather purse is right now you wouldn't exactly be taking divorce off the table either...

I hate this place.

Re: $$&(%^#@[email protected] MOLD!

  • Ew, that is truly disgusting.  I'm sorry, I have no advice on how to combat this, but I totally understand wanting to leave him to that hellhole!

People think I'm crazy for hating tropical islands, but stuff like this is why (yes, I realize you're not on an island - but the high humidity and bugs/problems that brings is similar).

Is there anyone in the area you are close enough to to ask?  Someone else must have gone through this and hopefully has some tips. If not - come to Dubai and work on a ship!  Tons of  yachts here.

     Good luck!

  • Instead of running the dehumidifier on your ac, can you buy a portable one and just run it in the closet? It's not the best solution, but it shouldn't dry the place out to the point of affecting your asthma, but should still suck out some moisture.

  • UGH! I would be really unhappy too.

Do you have a product called Damp Rid? We used to put that in our closets in the basement. Helped some. So, I'd wash everything that can be bleached with bleach (and spray down shelves, etc) and wipe out completely, then use the damp rid and possibly a portable dehumidifier in the closet? Or at least a fan?

I'll check and see what my friends in Fiji did - they had mold growing on absolutely everything.

  • Jetjur, can you drink in Dubai? I know H won't work or Russian or Egyptian owners, but I wonder about just the ME in general?  Odds are they won't hire me anyway since most yachts won't hire Americans.

Megger, we do have a portable one, but we'd have to have a plug installed in the closet.

    OMG, yes please!

The few people I do know here, just go "oh, yes the mold...that happens"  They seem to not care.  But then again, they also don't care that they have geckos pooping on their walls (they think I'm odd for having window screens), so I didn't really expect much in the way of sympathy.

  • Zwiggy, yes we have Damp-Rid.  Tried that.  The containers were being used every 72 hours.  Can't afford to keep that up.

  • We bought a bunch of small dehumidifiers and put them in our closets in our old place and that worked really well.

  • UK, thankfully the closet wall backs up to the living room wall that already has electricity running in it.  H says his marine license qualifies him to piggy back an outlet into the closet.  So we will try that, but it's going to send our electric bill through the roof running that thing 24/7!

We only have one closet in the whole house.  They don't believe in closets up here either. :-(

    Get an extension cord!

And yes, you can drink in Dubai, thank goodness.

Yes, you can drink.  You're supposed to have an alcohol license, but no one checks.  You can drink in hotels and bars (most of which are somehow connected to a hotel, but the connection is often very loose) and most people have tons of alcohol in their houses.

Hmmm, I know a guy who is American and works on a boat.  But I think he does powerboats since he says it pays better than yachts. Not sure that is affected by his nationality.  I'll ask him next time I see him.

If your H doesn't mind working for Emiratis or Saudis then I'd imagine he would have a good chance at finding a job.

They'll hire Americans, but it's few and far between.  You wouldn't believe the grief the Capt got coming and going from the ports in Egypt JUST because I had a US Passport (which is one of the reasons they don't like to hire us).

For VISA purposes I'm stuck here until December.  Plus H leaving OZ and going back to work on the yachts would be admitting that he was wrong.  Bwahahaha.

Yes, I married a special snowflake.

However, I do have resume out in Melbourne and Canberra.

  • I once lived in an apartment in a very very humid place and there was nothing we could do about it. Mold just like you said, and wet sheets - that was the worst! But  I think it was a problem with the apartment itself because not every place in town was like that.  Can you MOVE?! or do you own the place?
  • Mshark, H owns this place.  Trust me, if it was possible to move, I would have been out of here two weeks after we arrived.

We just got back from the store and, $100 poorer, now have a little closet sized dehumidifier. We'll see if that works.
