Mamie (or other grammatically-inclined individuals)

The morning show I listen to on the radio was having a discussion about apostrophes and last names.

We've all agreed that it's correct on holiday cards and the like to say "The Lastnames" (no apostrophe -- it's plural, not possessive).

So, one of the morning show hosts posted a photo album on the show's facebook page that he title "This Weekend at the Detrows."

One person said it's fine. One person said it needs an apostrophe between the "w" and the "s." I think you need an apostrophe after the "s" because the title is an abreviation of the sentence "This Weekend at the Detrows' house" and the house belongs to multiple Detrows.

Am I correct? What's the rule on this?

Re: Mamie (or other grammatically-inclined individuals)

  • Ahhh. My HUGEST pet peeve right now!

It's implied the location is referring to the home of the multiple Detrow family, so it would be "This Weekend at the Detrows'."

I just don't understand why people feel the need to throw apostrophes into every effing word!! I was reading a post on PC&E yesterday about the Royal Wedding guests. I saw at least four people refer to "the Obama's" not getting an invite.

When I educate people on this issue, I use a classic example like Smith and also one more complex like Jones.

     The Joneses went on vacation.

    The Joneses' cat is missing.

And people don't just mess up on surnames. Apostrophe abuse is EVERYWHERE! Why are people so afraid to pluralize words?? Especially ones that end in vowels? I'd rather see people never use apostrophes than use them SOOO blatantly wrong.  I told DH the other night that I would offer up free proofreading services for restaurants so I will never have to see things like "Stromboli's", "Pizza's", and "Taco's" again.

  • I would concur that it needs to go after the s, unless they were with only one Detrow.  To make it easier, they could always say the Weekend with the Detrows. When in doubt, rearrange your sentence!  LOL
We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

  • YAY! I was right!

I appreciated your rant (and I say "ditto" to it), but really, I was just looking for personal victory. Wink

I'll be the first to admit that I make error's like this, but I try to be quick to admit my mistake and correct it as soon as I see it.

    (heeheehee)

Yes, the apostrophe in "errors" is intentional. Stick out tongue

  • Apologies for the word vomit. I'm far more passionate about apostrophe abuse than I am real issues. My priorities are WEIRD.

Correct use of the English language (written and spoken) IS a real issue. Don't apologize. I wish people weren't so lax about it.

  • Late to the party but add another "you're right."

Confession - I am seriously thinking about quitting fb because it is starting to hurt my eyes.  I started hiding friends who are exceptionally bad but unfortunately that is becoming the majority of my friends.  At a certain point I would rather you just call me & tell me what is going on in your life so I can process it with correct punctuation.

I think this same thought once a day. My hide list is almost as big as my main list. At least that you can control. But what you can't control are the friends of friends whose comments you have to see. I never knew so many people were so illiterate. Damn you, social networking, for showing me the bitter truth.

Agree with all of the above. Friends of friends are the worst, I get so annoyed at people on FB.
