How to clean/wash area rugs?

We have 2 area rugs that desperately need to be cleaned, but I do not know how.  One is a hooked rug (as i would call it- a thick woven material with NO plastic backing). We paid $120 for it at an outlet (that is 3 hours away or I would just buy a new one) and have already paid to clean it once for $50- so I don't want to do that again. Can I take it to  laundromat and use one of those huge washers? Can  I dry it or do  I need to let it air dry, which is fine. The other one has a plastic mat backing and seems harder to wash, just as it seems less able to get into  a washing machine.  Thoughts or suggestions? Could I rent a carpet cleaner? Anyone done this before?-- TIA

Re: How to clean/wash area rugs?

  • My MIL has a carpet cleaner and we were going to use it on ours...I just can't seem to figure out how without ruining the wood floors.  I don't know where to clean it!
  • We just dry clean ours. I'm pretty sure it would fall apart in a washer. But it's up to you if you want to risk it.
