Cloth diaper moms - a couple questions

#1 - how many do you have?  We plan to use disposables for the first week or two, but I'm trying to figure out how many we'll need after that.  Is 20-25 reasonable?  I currently have six pockets and three covers with inserts/prefolds.  I'm about to order some more and will probably do more again later if it works well for us, but I want a jumping-off point when it comes to the number I'll *need*.

#2 - Anyone use Thirsties Duo Diapers?  I just prepped the ones I've ordered and I really like these.  Obviously, I won't know what I like for sure until the baby gets here and we test-drive them on her, but they seem like they adjust small enough for a tiny baby and I like the inner gussets.  Plus they seem really trim.  Just wondering if anyone has experience with them?  I only have one, but was thinking about getting a couple more.

#3 - What about Kawaiis?  They were suggested on the CD board and I've come across them a few times and the reviews seem good.  Anyone have any?  Like them?  I can get 10 for around $70 with shipping.  I was going to buy BGs at $107 for 8 with shipping.  Which route would you go?

#4 - Where's the best place to get wet bags?  I need one for the diaper bag and one for her room.

We have about 35 now that I have sold some off.  I think you *need* about 20 for a little baby, washing every other day.

I have friends who use the Duo Diaper and LOVE it, I don't have experience with them myself.

Again, I have no experience with Kawaii's but have heard good things.  I have heard good/bad with BGs and haven't used them because, from all my research, they aren't great with kids with super sensitive skin.  I'm kind of meh about them from researching them but again, no actual use of them.

#4 - Where's the best place to get wet bags?  I need one for the diaper bag and one for her room.

I just got a new RaR wetbag and LOVE it.  I also have Planetwise and Leslie's--oh, and a FB travelsize.

  • :::butting in:::

I have 3 brand new Bumgenius 3.0 AIO that I will sell you for $35.00.  I bought them in hopes of CDing but I don't think we are going to.

  • I currently have 16 Fuzzi Bunz and 6 RaR.  When I started, I had about 14 Fuzzi Bunz and washed every other day.  I sold off some and bought new to build up my stash.  I also tried different types like MonkeySnuggles Fitteds (not for me), gDiapers (leaked every time), Flip with cloth inserts and disposable (again, not for me).    You might consider TTBBB newborn rental to determine what you like best.  If you have too many different kinds, you might find that you prefer one kind and then end up selling the others to buy that one kind.

I haven't ever tried Thirsties or Kawaiis or even BGs.

I would get wet bags wherever you can find them cheapest.  If you want it locally, get it from TTBBB.  I have 3 Planet Wise (2 for daycare, one for home), 1 small Planet Wise for the diaper bag and then just got a RaR wet bag.  i like having the extra wet bag for home when the other one is in the wash, so you might get 2 of them.  I like both wet bags, but prefer the Planet Wise over the RaR due to the inner liner, which tends to keep it from smelling as quickly.

    Check diaperpin.com for sales!

#1 - how many do you have?

If you have 20 diapers, and a newborn goes through 12 in 24 hours (at least), you will need to wash every other day. That is a lot of diaper washing. I would get enough prefolds to get you through one more day (so washing every second day). We had 2 doz. infant size PFs and 1 doz. Kissaluvs size 0s & this was the perfect amount. If you are trying to use PFs/fitteds & covers pretty much exclusively until the baby fits into your pockets, I would not get less than 2 doz & I would def. recommend 3 doz. If you are going to go this route I would have no less than 5 covers. We had 6 & I thought that was just right.

Washing diapers is not like washing a quick load of clothes - you have to rinse, then wash, etc. & it takes longer. I would not want to have to do it every other day esp. with a tiny baby & your 2 older kiddos.

#2 - Anyone use Thirsties Duo Diapers?

yes, I really like them. I like their inserts too. NOTE: these will not fit until the baby is around 11-12 lbs. No adjustable or "one size" pockets will. I know the product info says they will but they won't, I promise. They'll leak esp. around the legs. But once the baby is older - definitely, pockets are awesome & I do like this brand.

    #3 - What about Kawaiis?

I have not tried Kawaiis but they look very similar to BGs. We use tons of BGs & love them. My only hesitation would be not to buy a big lot like that of 1 kind of diaper. I think there is a lot of personal preference re: diapers & you don't want to have spent a bunch of $$ on something you don't wind up liking. Find 1 Kawaii used or borrow one from a friend before you commit to this big lot.

#4 - Where's the best place to get wet bags?

First, you need 2 for her room. Otherwise when 1 is in the wash you have no place to put dirty diapers. My super fave wet bags are Monkey Foot Designs. The waterproof lining is much thicker & more substantial than other ones we've used. For the diaper pail at home, though, we use a pail liner from Wahmies (2 of them). We use the wetbags for daycare, which is fine b/c he only goes through 4-5 diapers there.

I think using a zippered wetbag at home would be a little bit cumbersome, as far as zipping/unzipping/holding a baby & a poopy diaper/ etc. I like just tossing it in the pail. We use a regular trash can with a swinging type lid. Tight fitting lid = more smelly, I think a little air flow is a good thing.

    HTH!

  • #1 - how many do you have?  I'm not sure of the exact number, but I know it's over 30 for sure.  I can go three days between washes and still have plenty of diapers to use on the 4th day (b/c we air dry the diapers and liners so it takes longer for them to be dry).  I think 20-25 is totally doable, moreso when the baby is older and you're not changing diapers so much.  Since Blythe was so small, we used disposables for the first 4-5 weeks.

#2 - Anyone use Thirsties Duo Diapers?  No experience with them.

#3 - What about Kawaiis?  No - I can only really speak for the FBs, BGs and the few Rumparooz I have.

#4 - Where's the best place to get wet bags?  I need one for the diaper bag and one for her room.  I bought my wetbags on etsy, but I know that Top to Bottom has really large ones for $20 and I will probably buy any future ones from them if necessary.  We have 4 large wetbags (I usually fill up 2 before washing, and since we air/line dry I need others to use at the same time), 1 medium and 2 small for being out and about.

#1 - how many do you have?  In the beginning I had 18 diapers. I had to wash about every day and a half (if that makes sense) I now have 24 and go every 2 days.

#2 - Anyone use Thirsties Duo Diapers?  I have 2 and they are one of my faves. I think I like them because they fit a little smaller since they are the duo size.

#3 - What about Kawaiis?  No idea about the Kawaiis but I do have BG's and they are not my fav.  They are quite bulky in the front where the insert snaps down. I do like them for overnights though.

#4 - Where's the best place to get wet bags?  Don't have one yet but I need to get one!

#1 - how many do you have? Bwahahaha. I have about 48 prefolds w/ 10 covers. 8 Bum Genius Organics, 16 Bum Genius 3.0s, 2 Rumparooz, 5 Haute Pockets, 2 Kiwi Pie Fitteds, 3 Star Baby Designs Fitteds, 1 Star Baby Designs AI2, and 17 Goodmamas. I think that is all.

#2 - Anyone use Thirsties Duo Diapers? No experience with these.

#3 - What about Kawaiis?  No experience with these either. I do love my BGs. Especially my Organics (now Elementals).

#4 - Where's the best place to get wet bags?  I have a Planet Wise one for my diaper bag, which I got free with a diaper order. Otherwise, I have 2 large size Paddle & Quack (?) hanging wet bags from Baby Steals.
