Health Insurance Vent Re: Birth Control...

I just need to vent for a minute.  I was on BCP for the last year and a half, but had to go off of it recently for medical reasons.  I payed a $20 copay every month for my BCP, and it was no big deal.  Well, now that I have to switch BC methods, I was looking into my other options.  Turns out our health insurance doesn't cover any BC options!  The only reason it covered the BCP is because it was a perscription!  Angry  I am so angry right now, and have no idea what we're going to do.  I don't have that kind of cash on hand, and our budget is tight, and getting tighter (due to H's job being in jeopardy possibly) so we can't afford the monthly payments for the options the nice lady at the doctor's office offered.

End of rant.

Re: Health Insurance Vent Re: Birth Control...

  • Find your local Planned Parenthood clinic and make an appointment. Depending on your income you may be eligible for low cost or free BC (they have options- pills, IUDs, implants, etc.) You just need to fill out some paperwork and probably spend a long wait to be seen, but if you can get it super cheap or free, its worth it.

  • Ditto Planned Parenthood.  I actually did pay for BC at one point due to insurance changes, it is still a lot cheap then having a child.  Some insurance feel its not a needed drug.

  • can you get on a generic form? When I was on BCP it was $8 a month

We switched insurance companies in February (DH's job switched I should say), and when they did that they automatically switched me to the generic, and I had an allergic reaction to it.

Thanks for the advice about Planned Parenthood.  I used a service similar to that when I was in college, but someone told me that if you have healthcare coverage available, you don't qualify.  I might be totally wrong.  I'll have to look into it more.

  • nope, not true. if you don't have ins they base what you are charged on how much the household makes. if you do have ins then it's whatever the copay is. but i suppose you actually do have ins, they just don't cover it. i would call PP and how they can help. i'm sure that they can. also, try going to lesser known locations for shorter wait times. if i go to the one in the city i can easily wait an hour, and at one point waited 2.5 hours past my appt time before throwing a hissy fit. but if i go to the one out in the suburbs it's not as bad of a wait-20 min maybe?
Thanks to our wonderful RE our family is complete!

  • That sucks.  If it makes you feel better, I live in a state where BCP isn't covered by insurance...but Viagra is.
  • This is exactly what mine does, too!

    I think it's a load of bullshit!

    /facepalm

Why don't insurance companies see how much cheaper it is to pay for birth control pills/methods than it is to pay for a) a child's delivery and b) the healthcare for that child FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIFE. Why don't they use common sense? I can't believe Viagra is covered and bcp isn't. Rediculous.

  • You could try FAM and/or condoms.
