Birth Control and Pancreatitis?

So, I have just spent the past 4 days in the hospital while they desperately tried to figure out what was wrong with me.  Turns out I have pancreatitis, and the doctor thinks it could be because of my Birth Control (Ortho-Cyclen (sp?)).  I am not sure if this is true since I've been on it for a year with no previous issues.

Either way, I stopped taking it last night, and today startedd feeling better.  That makes me even more questioning of the birth control theory since it's not out of my system yet after 1 day of not being on it.  Anyway, I have to go see my OB soon to have her put me on something else.

Has anyone else had this problem or heard of someone else who had this problem?  TIA for your info./help!

Re: Birth Control and Pancreatitis?

  • I'd get a second opinion.

If they think it's birth control related be prepared to go with an iud or use non-hormonal birth control.

  • Yes it is possible to get pancreatitis from BC. Your Dr is going to need to find an alternative for you..

  • Thanks guys!  I'm calling my OB first thing Monday morning to see what she recommends.

I've been on ortho-cyclen since April 2009.  In February of this year, I switched insurance companies, and they switched me to the generic version.  Within 2-3 days I had a rash all over my body from an allergic reaction to it.  Within 2-3 days of switching back to the name brand, it cleared up, and I haven't had a problem since.  That's why I didn't know about this kind of reaction.  I'm sure my OB has seen it all and can recommend something else though.

  • it sounds like you've been having a lot of problems with Hormonal Birth Control. If I were you, I'd find a non-hormonal option. (in fact...I switched to FAM about three months ago...best decision I ever made)

A friend recommended that as well, and suggested reading the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" (that might not be the exact name).  I think I'm going to order it off Amazon, and look into the FAM thing.  Not sure how DH will go with that (He's what you might call paranoid when it comes to birth control), but I want to at least do some research.  I figure the more I know about it, the more I can teach him about it, and maybe he won't be as paranoid.  Who knows how guys think though?

If anything, it'll help you understand your body better and you'll be more prepared to understand when you're able to get pregnant if that's ever something you might want to do. It also helps you to figure out if you have an infection or some other vaginal issue.

  • I had pancreatitis back in March 07 and the doc was never able to tell me why I got it, but I always questioned it if was the BC. I was also on ortho tri-cyclin lo.

That's another good point.  We do want kids some day, and you're right knowing my body better definitely won't hurt the endeavor.
