How are you this week? Ups and downs to report? News?

QOTW (from traveling turtle): What books/resources did you use or do you plan on using for those first couple of months of the baby's life?

Re: Bumps Mothers and Others

  • Ups: Saw the doctor on Thursday. Everything's going good. As of today I am 32 weeks pregnant which is just crazy. We have so much stuff to get, but I think we can get it all in 2 or 3 trips and an online purchase or two.

Downs: I will randomly not feel well, but fortunately it's nothing consistent. Yesterday I felt really heavy. I don't have a full length mirror in my house so I just recently noticed how large I am. I don't have issues with gaining weight, especially during the pregnancy, but wow. I'm HUGE! And I still have 2 months to go!

QOTW: I was reading that the Happiest Baby on the Block is a great DVD to watch and I think I'm going to get it. I feel like I should read something because I'm clueless, but now that I have my midwife and I know she can come over as frequently as she can, I'm not as concerned as I once was.

  • Ups: We're not sick anymore! *cheer* Bean started using a new word ("ew ew" meaning "change my poopy diaper"). It's also exciting to see her level of interaction with her peers continue to increase. Cute moment of the week: We saw a roller figure skater (is that what they're called?) on Denmark's Got Talent, and at the end of her routine, she did a little curtsy. Then Bean grabbed a couple of the larger, flatter Duplos, put them on the floor, stood on them, and did a curtsy too.

Downs: I missed my midwife's appointment due to being sick last week, and I waited to reschedule until I was well again. I made the appointment yesterday (couldn't call Fri-Sun) and apparently my midwife ONLY comes in on Mondays and only for a couple of hours, so I won't see her for two weeks. That's three weeks after the missed appointment, and I'm supposed to see her every month anyway, so essentially, I didn't get that appointment at all. I'm not worried about it, but it's just kind of disappointing not to get any updates, kwim? Also, Bug has repositioned, and I'm not sure, but I think she may be transverse. Unlike Bean, she doesn't move around that much and I was really hoping she'd stay head down! Another reason I'd have preferred to see the midwife sooner so I'd know for sure what's going on.

QOTW: I read so many books. I read Sears' AP book, Montessori from the start? I tried reading the Continuum Concept, but I just couldn't get through it. I never did read Happiest Baby on the Block, but I watched a clip of the video and I think it was more helpful than anything else I'd read. Swaddling + white noise = MIRACLE. I'm glad I read other stuff too, but I didn't use anything as a Bible. I just collected ideas and ended up with a mish mash of whatever worked.

  • How are you this week? Ups and downs to report? News?
I am getting concerned about the weight gain. At this point in time with DD I had already gain waaaay more than now, I had actually stopped weighing around 22-24 weeks because I was gaining so much, but back then the midwife told me not to worry since I started off underweight it was normal to gain more. Now I have only gained about 5-6 kg (due to constant vomiting I assume) and it looks like I haven't gained anything in the past couple of weeks which is beginning to worry me. DH tries to make me feel better by saying that it will be easier to get rid of the baby fat afterwards but I had no problem with that first time around when I gained a lot so that is not helping.

QOTW (from traveling turtle): What books/resources did you use or do you plan on using for those first couple of months of the baby's life?
I read a lot of books on baby sleep since this was an issue, other than that I had Dr. Sears' book, "what to expect in the first year" and that was about it I think. My most helpful resource was my sister :)

  • Ups are that I know where I'll be giving birth, now I'm just trying to sort out my new doctor there since I won't meet her/him until I"m 36 weeks. Yikes. Downs are that I am having residual pain from my shingles on the front of my bump, and that I have to take the 3 hour glucose test because my numbers didn't pass the first GD test. I know this is something that happens to a lot of people, but I've been really upset about it because I know I eat healthier and exercise more than most people. Grrrrr. I also had weird results on my folate and b12 blood draw, making them think I might be anemic. WTF? I've never had health problems while not pg!

QOTW (from traveling turtle): What books/resources did you use or do you plan on using for those first couple of months of the baby's life? We have been given Happiest Baby on the Block book and DVD by several people who swear by it, so we plan on taking the hint and using that, as well as What to Expect the First Year and I'm reading Momma Zen.
  • Can you add me to the list? EDD is March 21.

I read lots of different books but then decided to just see how it went, and don't think we really stuck to any one way of doing things.

I know how hard it is, but don't worry too much. Being sick all the time is no fun, and I can't imagine how hard it would be to gain weight that way! Maybe you'll go in a huge spurt at the end Wink. According to our home scale, I haven't gained any in the last month since my last appt (I have another one today) either, which seems impossible because I know I'm bigger out front and I feel like my a$$ is spreading at an alarming rate. It's all so confusing!

Thanks! I didn't make an announcement on here, just tried to sneak it in :)

  • Sneaky sneaky! I added you. :)
  • Congrats, Andrea!!! H&H nine months!

I feel a lot more human these days. Beth sleeps really well, and we're getting into a nice routine.

I've read What to expect the first year, but am mostly relying on instinct, my mom, and health professionals.

  • I?m feeling extremely moody today. I have no idea why, but I just am. The weather is less than nice so maybe that?s part of the problem.

My ob/gyn gave me a maternity support belt to wear to help with my tailbone pain, but honestly I`m not sure that I?m doing it right, and what feels good standing up doesn?t feel good sitting down.

QOTW: I borrowed WTE from a friend, and I?ve read through it. Some of it seems useful, and some seems, well a little weird. I was also given a German book on the first year that rubs me the wrong way...just way to preachy for my taste. I thought I would look into the Happiest Baby on the Block and see about getting that.

  • Congrats Andrea!!

Ups: Something clicked with W in potty training. He's still not telling us he has to go, but conversely, he's had no (wet) accidents since he got sick. He's woken up from naps dry all weekend, wees bigger amounts in the potty, and seems to be holding it easily for a few hours. Poos are a different story,a nd I may have jinxed myself re: wees, but there you go. My silver lining to a bad weekend...

Downs: W has had a nasty virus the past week - first a gastro-intestinal one, now a bad head. He's getting better, but is so tired, cranky, and fussy, it's doing my head in. Add into that DH is away all week in Finland, I'm pooped.

QOTW: I didn't actually read anything before. I probably should have, but didn't. After, i read a few, but like others, just played around until we found things that worked.

    Mum to W (4) and M (nearly 2)
  • Ups: We're doing well. T goes for her NICU follow up on Thursday so I'm kind of nervous/anxious about that. T is a drooling machine these days but no teeth yet.

Downs: Not too much to report.

QOTW: We read & watched Happiest Baby on the Block, read the WTE series and Dr. Sears AP book. We didn't get to use much them in the beginning because of our situation. Now I kind of just go with the flow and read as I go.

  • ups: getting some energy back...finally.  NT scan next week.

downs:  i think i got a tummy bug, so the last couple days haven't been so fun.

qotw: no idea, i will be taking your recommendations and getting some books while we are back in the states.  cheers.

  • Ups: Genna is getting over her cold finally - so so glad about that. Also our mothers group is breaking out on our own now (had 4 sessions with a local nurse first) and there are SO many ladies I like in the group - 12 of us in total - I think we'll make some good friends :)

Downs: she got her immunizations this week - awful to see her cry like that. Also the pediatrician said her hips felt loose, so we went for an ultrasound today. I was so worried, crying a lot, but apparently her hips aren't bad at all, hopefully they'll only just have her come back in 3 months to check again, but they looked pretty good - such a frickin relief.

What books/resources did you use or do you plan on using for those first couple of months of the baby's life?

We got the Aussie bible - Baby Love, which I really like. I also have What to Expect the First year (which is very good) and Your Baby Week by Week which is FAB!!! It's a UK book. I have been reading all of those and using them as references when things go wrong. But really we just go with the flow - I heard about white noise - so we have a radio on a fuzzy station and we swaddle - and then really I just go with her cues on everything else:)

    CONGRATS!!!!!!!!
  • Wow, I'm at the top of the Bumps List! Oh and I currently back in the States, in Kentucky.

I am doing well just excited to meet my child. And I'm enjoying my time with DS who is blissfully unaware that there's a pretender to his throne!

QOTW (from traveling turtle): What books/resources did you use or do you plan on using for those first couple of months of the baby's life?

I had read the Pregnancy Week by Week (UK book) and I like it. After my sleepless son was born, I got the Happiest Baby DVD and Healthy Sleep Habits, happy Child. I don't make a move without my Homedics Sound Spa white noise machine!

  • Congrats Andrea!! Thats wonderful news!

Ups:  My mom sent me Grape Jelly in mail and I can't wait to have a PB&J.  Also in my shipment are some maternity clothes I ordered from ON.  I'm excited to have something new in my wardrobe.

Downs:  I have to take my GD test this week.  I'm not looking forward to it.  One because I have a bad feeling about it and two, I don't want to retake the longer one.  I guess I should just get it done and worry about it later.

QOTW:  When we go home I'll probably get WTE and something else.
