Palin's baby cover-up rumors?

There are a lot of stories on Digg about a theory that Palin's down syndrome baby is not hers, but her young daughter's. Here are links to a few of the stories. Nothing has been substantiated but I can only imagine atleast one big news outlet will investigate it.  I don't know what to think about it.

 Your thoughts?

Re: Palin's baby cover-up rumors?

  • Lot of people talking about this on E08 last night and this morning.

I think it's disgusting of Daily Kos to put pictures of a 16 year old girl up and analyze her body.  It's so beyond inappropriate that I don't know where to start.

I think it's a legitimate question, but it makes me really uncomfortable that they are dragging this 16 year old girl into it.  So, I'm conflicted.

And, I while I think the facts don't totally add up and I'm skeptical, I don't buy it.

  • a few months ago, there was a thread on one of the pregnancy boards about Palin. Apparently she went into labor while on a trip to TX and then flew back to Alaska to have the baby. the fact that she decided to fly back whle in labor was the topic of discussion. so it's most likely her baby. I think a 44-yr old is a lot more likely to have a DS baby than a 16 y.o.
  • It certainly does seem like this is garnering more and more attention. However, I can't believe that McCain's people would not have found this out during the vetting process.

  • I was just reading about that this morning. And I agree with the pp that I think it's terrible that they were analyzing some poor, 16 year old girl's stomach...that's pretty cruel. However, if the story ends up being true it will be VERY interesting to see how it all plays out.

    Ditto.

I also think that it is sad that we want to nitpick how pregnant or not Palin looked. A quick look at the vents on the trimester boards makes it clear that women find it very offensive and frustrating when people contantly evaluate and comment on their PG weight and compare their bodies to other PG women. And as we all know, there isn't a "one size fits all" PG look. Women say it to each other on these boards day in and day out.

All political leanings aside, that Daily Kos entry was upsetting to me on a woman-level.

From loss and infertility to two under two!

  • Very curious to find out if there's truth to it.  I am much less concerned with how Palin looked 7 months pregnant, but to take an EIGHT HOUR FLIGHT with a stop-over, while in labor, and then travel another 45 minutes by car to less equipped hospital.... it gives me some pause.  Oh, and she was steadily leaking amniotic fluid.  Oh, and she gave a key-note address, while said fluid was leaking.   I guess it shows where her priorities are...?

  • You know, I think it's sad the daughter is being pulled into it all. But I really do think that it could show us something about Palin. She's such a stickler for abstinence only education, but how can she back that as a 100% effective method if her 16 yr old daughter had a child? It all seems a bit fishy to me. I found this one picture that I found really interesting.

  • Like the pps, I feel sorry for the 16 yr old kid in all this.  But, I do find it quite strange that the teen was out of school for 5+ months while this was all going on... AND that she (Palin) supposedly took and 8 hour flight while in labor??  I mean, who does that?  If it's true, that's pretty messed up in this day and age.

  • I feel sorry for poor Bristol Palin either way. If this is true, it is sad that her family felt they had to cover it up in this way. If this isn't true, it is horrible that she is being dragged through this.

  • While it is incredibly sad, it's still a family thing. I am not sure how it should become public knowledge or issue. I am all for her ticket losing, but I think it should be on their issues, not because of some family thing like this (especially if it was just some internal family choice and there is no abuse or anything involved. Maybe she thinks it's better to raise the kid herself than her 16-year-old daughter).
  • AJ...I agree with you..it's a family thing if true.  And I don't know anything about those websites so who knows if it's legitimate or not.

  • AJ....i think for the first time ever I am disagreeing with you. This is not just a family thing, it involves lying and a huge cover up if it is true. It is one thing to want to protect your daughter and grandchild and want to raise it but to say you are pregnant, when you are not (if this is true) is flat out lying and just wrong.

now that all being said, there was a great story in the post about she was picked and McCain only met her a handful of time. I am curious if the intense vetting I would assume goes into this stuff isn't as intense as I thought.

Also, if this is some sort of cover up, I question how on earth Paulin thought no one would ever find this out. (which was my same question for Larry Craig and any other politician who lies and gets caught)

I fully agree.  Dragging family through the mud, especially a child with DS and a 16 year old is low and not something that should be discussed.  People should be elected based on the political issues at hand, NOT based on their family issues.

I disagree.  If this is the child's and she's claiming it as her own on her health insurance, that is fraud. And serious fraud, given the child has a disability.  I think that is incredibly relevant to her character and her honesty.

Not to mention, she is getting a tremendous political boost from pro-lifers who admire her courage to carry to term a child with Down's Syndrome.  I think it's pretty brave and admirable too, but I've got a big problem with it if she's benefiting politically from claiming this child is hers when it isn't.

Of course, I'm still not sold on the truth of this story.  And I'm still skeeved out by the pics of the daughter. I just think it is 100% a legitimate question to pursue.

  • I'll be curious to see how this pans out because I believe it is more than a family issue, esp. because of how folks have played up how admirable it is that she carried a Downs baby to term with knowledge of the diagnosis.  If it isn't true, I can't believe that she would take flights while in labor and not tell the flight attendants.  It was her fifth kid -- later labors are usually much quicker.  Not safe.

I completely agree with ESF.  I don't 100% believe the story, and I hate that they were analyzing a teenage girl's body, but if it is true, she is lying to the public and covering something up and it IS our business.

  • Very interesting. I'm sure someone can dig up some hospital records if they try hard enough. I do think this is a relevent question, because the Republicans have made "family values" such a big issue for them. For the people who are asking how Palin thought she could keep it a secret.... remember John Edwards?
