***Mrs.E***

What is the Swedish holiday today? All I could get out of a Swede I talked to this morning was that everyone was going to "get drunk and burn stuff." Wha???

Definitely doesn't sound like Denmark's Big Praying Day, anyway.

Re: ***Mrs.E***

  • Not Mrs E but I can answer anyway. It's called Valborsgm?ssoafton (Walpurgis Night) or in Sk?ne it's mostly known as Siste April. I'm not really sure of the origin but basically it's to celebrate spring.

It's not really a holiday though, you don't get the day off work or anything and stores are open. Usually for most people (unless you're a student) the only celebration would be to go to a park in the evening where you watch the a bonfire and a choir sings Spring songs.

For students though it's a much bigger thing. In Lund the student nations play games in the morning and then tens of thousands of people go to the park and have a picnic and drink lots of alcohol. The partying usually goes on all night.

It's also a big night of drunkenness for teenagers, lots of 14 - 15 year olds (or younger!) probably got way too drunk for the first time yesterday.

  • Ah, very interesting. Thanks for answering! No wonder I couldn't find anything, since I was looking for "day off work" kinda holidays. We definitely don't do anything like that here in Denmark.
  • LOL at "get drunk and burn stuff". That is a good description of Valborg, which was yesterday. Today is May Day (F?rsta maj), when you are supposed to go protest for the working class.
