Where should I look for...

Mother of the Bride dresses?  My mom is having trouble (becz she's looking in the wrong places - read those places that are advertised in the coupon inserts of the newspaper).

since the wedding is on the beach, that makes things a little more complicated (like how formal do you go).  When she saw my dress, she thought what she had picked out was too casual (which it was).

 Any ideas?

Re: Where should I look for...

  • Does it have to be from a store in town? Dress barn can have some nice things online check chadwicks or Newport News maybe speigel.
  • Macy's?

What type or style or color is she looking for?

  • These are sort of "mother of the bride" dresses.  The knee length might make them a little less formal and maybe a little more beach-appropriate...?  Maybe?

  • I'm all for mail order!  I think she is going for more flowy and not structured.  She is on the bigger side so some of those column dresses I see MOB stuff for won't work very well for her. Thanks for the recs so far.  I'm going to take a look when the boys are napping!

    This is sort of flowy.

It's really hard finding a MOB dress.  My mom and I have completely different taste, so trying to figure out what a 50+ year old woman would wear when you are in your 20's and 30's is hard.

  • My mom had the worst time ever finding a MOB dress.  I think she may still be scarred by that very long and frustrating shopping experience.  She ended up ordering one from a store in Gaylord which I'm sure doesn't help you at all.

My MIL ordered hers from David's Bridal, but I just looked at their web site and I don't see anything that fits what you're looking for.

I'd check out Macy's and the other major department stores.

I like where this one is going.  Where did you find it?

  • My Mom, for my brother's March cruise wedding, found this one at JC Penney.  She had the worst time finding a dress-- even places like Macys were a bust, but this was a couple months ago.  It looked dressier w/ jewelry and sparkly sandals.

  • My mom really likes Coldwater Creek, and they usually have a good selection of dresses both in the store - if she wants to try on to get a feel for the fit - and online.

  • My mom got her MOB dress at Younkers.

Check Dillards.  They seemed to have a lot of flowy dresses.

  • My Mom and I tended to not like mother of the bride dresses.  She actually ended up with BM dresses for both mine and my sister's wedding.  So I would either look at BM dresses or just the formal wear section at JCP/Macy's/Younkers for something like that blue dress the pp posted.

bigger side? so is my Mom. she bought a dress online for my wedding and ended up wear a pants suit instead. Now she has a $90 dress she isn't going to be wearing. She is going to be putting it in her garage sale next week. what color is she lookig for. i might be able to find a picture of it if your interested.
  • Is she here in town? I'd have her check Daniel's. They are really expensive, but we went there first for my Mom's dress. She was able to try on lots of different styles, and she found one she liked. We were then able to know what we were looking for either online or in other less expensive stores. She ended up finding her dress on the clearance rack at Younkers.
  • O.k. I'm totally blanking on the name but I'm sure someone here will know it. The bridal store between GR & Lansing that everyone loved going to, well they have a smaller store across the street specifically for MOB & MOG. My mom found her dress there. She also found dresses she liked at Nordstroms, Saks & Neiman Marcus at Somerset in Troy. Actually the dress she got was at Nordstroms but not in the right size.
