Sex and UTI

So my husband and I have opposite schedules so we are not able to have sex as much as we would like to...we usually do atleast once a week. When I first became sexually active I got a UTI and was told to do pee after sex. So I do that everytime...however, recently I have noticed that the next morning I have the feeling that i am starting to get a UTI. Would anyone have any suggestions as to why this might be? thanks. :)

Re: Sex and UTI

  • Every woman's body is different in this respect--I know several women who get frequent UTIs and yeast infections. Until about two-years ago I had never had either one. Now, I occasionally get UTIs if I have to pee very badly and am forced to hold it for an extended length of time (like on a long drive--why, oh why, aren't there more rest stops on the highway?!).

I can't really offer an opinion on the cause of your UTIs, but would definitely recommend you ask your doctor. I can, however, offer a simple solution that really works--and works well! Drink a glass of cranberry juice every time you think you're getting a UTI. I read of this solution in a book on holistic healing and have used it to cure my last six or seven UTIs.

If I get a full-blown UTI, which has only happened twice since I discovered cranberry juice, I drink a 6 oz. glass of cranberry juice every two-hours or so and it works like a charm. You'll feel instant relief. In your case, I would even recommend using it as a preventative. Drink a glass the morning after and I bet your problem would be solved.

Plus, cranberry juice is great for you, so there are added health benefits, too!

  • I would highly suggest a cranberry supplement--they're a little easier to stomach than the juice, and much more concentrated.

I take the AZO cranberry supplements. The juice is too acidic on my stomach to drink it all the time. You can usually find them by the tampons, pads, and yeast medicine.

When my FI and I first started dating she got one of these after a very sexually active weekend we had.  She got over it, and started taking some sort of cranberry pills/suppliments and has not had any issues since.  I think she takes 2 or 3 of these pills a day with her other vitamins.

She is also pretty deligent about cleaning up and using the bathroom after sex, probably does it 70-80% of the time.

I highly recomend you try some of these.  I even take 1 or 2 a day and have noticed an improvement in my flow.

  • That happens to me sometimes. Keep in mind that just because you pee doesn't mean you're completely cleaned out. When it starts to feel like that I drink a ton of water and take cranberry supplements. I find that cranberry juice can exacerbate the issue (at least in my case).

  • I just wanted to chime in with my tale.

I seemed to get UTI's fairly frequently for years.  I would go into my OB, she would prescribe antibiotics and the infection would go away.  Eventually I went to a new OB who was also a urologist.  She ran a more sensitive test on my urine and figured out that I was carrying a low level infection all the time.  She put me on a prescription for 90 days to kill the infection and strengthen my bladder.  I have never had another UTI.

  • UTI's are the absolute worst. I get them frequently...but less often since I've learned how to manage them slightly better. Yes, pee after sex...but also, I had a OB who gave me antibiotics, but at a lesser dosage...so when I feel like I'm getting one, I can take a pill. So maybe you can check on that? Also, AZO works well, and there are prescription strength options too.
  • Also, maybe if it's every time, there's a developing UTI that isn't as bad as it normally is. ;) Talk to your OB

I'm going to ask my doctor about this.  I get one every 3 - 6 months.  I take a cranberry supplement, pee 100% of time immediately after sex, drink plenty of water and still get them.  It's terrible.  Some people are just more prone to them for a number of reasons.  Mine seem to be very resistant to any home remedies and most antibiotics.  Only one drug seems to do the trick.

  • Another thing to consider is if you use condoms. I was getting UTIs all the time and my gyno told me that spermicide in condoms can really affect some people.
  • I have to second the cranberry juice and supplements. In my case the actual juice in my body helps more. I don't really notice a difference with just taking supplements with water. But either way try them both. Make sure it's 100% cran juice too, none of that juice cocktail stuff. You can find the cran supplements in the vitamin isle.

So my husband and I have opposite schedules so we are not able to have sex as much as we would like to...we usually do at least once a week.  I feel you?re doing what?s needed for your marriage.  Don?t feel bad that you?re not able to have sex more often: but, sometimes it?s just not the case.  When I first became sexually active I got a UTI and was told to do pee after sex. Was this advice from your doctor or friend(s)?  So I do that every time ? however, recently I have noticed that the next morning I have the feeling that I am starting to get a UTI.  This sounds as though you need to see your doctor; you?re possibility getting an infection which needs some care taken to keep it in check.  Would anyone have any suggestions as to why this might be?  I?m not sure why; but, I suggest you see your physician ASAP.  Thanks:  You?re welcome!

Here is a little extra ? I?m not sure about the advice given on cranberries ? but it probably isn?t such a bad idea since they?ve found recently that many antitoxins abound within many fruits, berries, vegetables, teas etc.  I?ve found that a 4-6 oz. cup of hot green tea daily does wonders for many health problems.  It doesn?t hurt to use many of these as well as prescription drugs.  Talk with your doctor ? just for your own peace of mind.  OK!  GL!!!

    Just chiming in...

I got a UTI almost every time I had sex with my DH.  Eventually, I was referred to a uroligist.  Now after we have sex, I take an antibiotic.  I've been UTI free for 6 months now and it's been wonderful.  If you get frequent UTI's-- see a doctor.

(I was diagnosed with a narrow urethra, so that may have a bit to do with it, but still-- go to a doctor!)

  • Oh that's interesting.  I'm constantly on the edge of one and when I start to feel one coming on I drink Cranberry Juice.  It works, but now I'm on a constant diet of juice.  Looks like I need to visit my doctor.
