Xylitol

Thoughts on xylitol? It's in toothpastes and gums in place saccharin or other sweeteners. I just bought some new toothpaste and got home and realized it's in it...Tom's of Maine claims it's purpose is antiplaque, though. I've heard mixed things, what do you think of the risk of exposure to small amounts like that in toothpaste?

Re: Xylitol

  • my understanding is that it's not only a sweeetner, but is beneficial in that it can prevent cavities.

    I am the 99%.
  • We don't have it in our household.  It can be fatally toxic to dogs (and maybe cats?).  None of our pets have stealing gum or toothpaste issues, but I'd prefer to not have it around, just in case.
  • we do have a gum stealer so we don't keep it around either.
