Ladies Poker Night?

Hey, ladies!

I'm new to this forum - pretty new to the Nest in general - but I'm looking for some entertaining ideas and I thought this would be a good place to jump in.

My husband is going to be out of town for a weekend at the end of April and I think this will be the perfect time to host a ladies poker night.  We've been in our current town for almost 3 years and it's taken a while to develop some close local friendships.  We haven't hosted a party here before, so I want this to be fun and low key.

I'm thinking drinks, good food, a few poker tables, some classic music to set the theme.  Depending on how many people show, I guess we'll have 2-4 poker tables (or less, if some don't want to play?)  Does this sound like a fun time?  I'd like some ideas and suggestions.

Since we all live sort of spread out and I'm sure there will be drinking, I want to extend the invitation that anyone who wants to can spend the night.  I thought we could have a movie marathon - maybe along the Vegas theme or... something else?

I'd love to hear your suggestions - I want this to be a fun night.

Re: Ladies Poker Night?

  • I should mention that we all run in common circles so, while some girls know each other better than others, we are all acquainted and get along well.

  • I think an Ocean's (insert number of attendees here) theme would be fun- you could have the movies playing in the background, serve drinks named after the characters and do a buffet style spread since that is very Vegas.

  • Some other fun Vegas movies are The Hangover and What Happens in Vegas (with Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher)

Party City has a lot of casino night decorations, including cups, plates, etc.

  • I think good food and drinks are the key.  Either serve food first or have finger foods that are easy to eat while playing.

I hope you have a good turnout, but I would personally have a hard time coming up with 4 tables of women who like playing poker that I would want to invite to a party (and I play a lot of poker and have a lot of friends generally:)

Are you going to do tournament style or cash?  Either way, most games I get involved in, food and playing cards is about all that anyone has energy for.  The movies would probably be unneccessary.  If you are playing poker for money, be sure to have set rules.  If you are not playing for money, I suspect most people will get tired of playing pretty quickly (which isn't necessarily a bad thing.)  I personally do not enjoy playing poker that is either not for cash or at least in a tournament setting where the winner gets some sort of prize--just because people don't really play properly and it isn't fun for me.

I would suggest doing some fun 80s music or whatever other cheery music your group likes.
