Which couple gets the guest bedroom?

For a few weeks we have had plans with a couple to come over for NYE tonight (they are boyfriend, girlfriend, together about 2 years). The guy is my husband's best friend. A few days ago, another couple decided to join us (they are husband and wife) and the girl is my best friend. Nothing has been mentioned of where everyone is sleeping yet, but we only have one guest bedroom. The other couple will have to blow up an air mattress and sleep in our den.

Who gets the guest bedroom? The married couple? Or the couple that we had plans with longer?

Re: Which couple gets the guest bedroom?

  • I would probably say the couple you had plans with longer. Since the other couple just decided to join a few days ago, I think they would understand. Just politely say that you made plans with so and so to stay over a while ago. Although it probably doesn't matter and hopefully either couple would be perfectly okay with not having the guest room.
  • Unless you would NEVER allow unmarried people to sleep in the same bedroom (in which case they shouldn't even be together with an air mattress), I would give the bedroom to the couple you originally had plans with.  It's only fair.  The 2nd couple would have known that you already had guests coming, so they should understand that the guest bedroom was already taken.

I would only make an exception to "first plans get the room" if someone was very pregnant - in which case it might be hard to get off an air mattress!

  • All other things being equal, the first couple you had plans with. I don't see how being married means you get a bed over others.

  • or - First couple to go to bed.  (although it's moot at this point)

  • I've been in this situation before! Whoever got to our house first, got the actual bed. The second couple that arrived got the pull out in our bonus room or the air mattress in the spare bedroom (our storage room for now).
  • We always do a '1st call, 1st stay' rule at our house. It works well when inviting over more than one potential guest. The only time I had to change from that plan is when a family with little kids came so I had to bump a couple so we could send the kids to bed early so all of us grown ups could stay up.
  • I might not even really designate a place for anybody. Just tell them these are your options, and see who politely takes the air mattress.

Or you could just let the first couple that arrives put their stuff in whatever room they choose.

  • In MY house, the married couple would get the guest bedroom. Anyone who would stay at my house knows that DH and I don't support a couple who isn't married to sleep in the same bed in our own home. We have strong feelings about this because of our religious beliefs. I have no idea how you feel about that, but you and your DH need to decide for yourselves how you will handle that situation.

  • I just wanted to update everyone and say that the married couple arrived 5 MINUTES before the other couple and so I had them put their things in the guest bedroom right away. ;) This way they already had the bedroom before the other couple arrived. Literally, it was by a few minutes though!!! That was a tough one. Thanks everyone!!!
