How did you meet...

your foreign H/ FI?

I moved to London because I wanted to live and teach here for about 2 years. I had no friends so I joined a social group and met FI within weeks of landing here.

Re: How did you meet...

  • I moved to Wales to do a PhD, met DH through friends 2.5 years in, and then stayed. :)

The funny 'fate' thing is the crush I had my first year, his best friend's GF and I became quite good friends, and hung out a lot. She was housemates with DH and set us up. It's a shame, but we've since lost touch.

  • We met at a wedding in Pittsburgh, spent 5 days together, and I flew out to London 3 weeks later to visit him, starting a year and a half of flying back and forth every month (one of us). Then I moved over there.

    What is your PhD in?

    The short answer: History.

Long answer - you don't want to know! :)

  • I moved to Luxembourg because I didn't want to live in England again (had to leave the states because my visa expired). I started working at a Bar & Grill. FI was a regular and we started to flirt, one thing led to another and here we are :)

  • We're both American, so kind of a lame answer but... I caught him on the re-bound from a 5yr live-in relationship with London (his favorite place on earth).  He knew virtually no one and was miserable in his new home town (DC).  I knew lots of people and adored DC, thought I might never leave.

Oddly, it all worked out and 9yrs later we're married and living in Italy.  Very happy compromise ;)!

  • He was opening up an office for the company he worked for in Dallas. We met 3 months after he moved there. 9 months after that I was living in England.
  • DH played hockey in my hometown for the university there. I went home for Thanksgiving in 2001 and met him through my best friend. We were long distance for a few years, then finally started moving around together.
  • DH spent a year at my high school on a scholarship program thingy where one swedish student comes there every year. Yeah neither of us really saw all this coming when we got together!! We did the long distance thing for the rest of high school and college (although I did study abroad in Stockholm and he studied abroad in the US), then I moved here after I graduated.

  • We met online 10 years ago. If you're interested in the whole story, you can read this: http://howtoplayhouse.wordpress.com/2009/06/26/girl-meets-boy/

  • I met him at a bar in Georgetown (Washington DC) randomly on a night out with girlfriends. ?I was living in DC and he and some friends had roadtripped down from Philly (which happens to be my hometown-small world). He is Irish, but was in the US on a work visa for years.?
  • A friend of mine from college did the study abroad thing and met her DH. My DH and him were childhood friends. My DH came with hers for a visit once and we met that way. About two months later he emailed me, which I ignored for weeks. He then phoned me and we literally have spoken every day since.
  • At a bar in Georgetown (Washington, DC) with my Mom.  We "hung out" for 5 days and then I flew to visit him in Scotland a month later for a week, flew out again a few months later, then he flew out for a week 4 months later and then he lived with me for 3 months in DC, before I moved over here a year after we first met.

Random nights out in Gtown lead to long and lovely relationships, lol.

  • We're both Americans.  We met because MH moved into my building back home and bought the condo right underneath me.  Hilarity and love ensued.
  • DH and I met in Atlanta. My friend and I had our class cancled for Monday so we wanted to go out. Being the bible belt, everything closes at midnight on Sundays inside of the city. If you want to go out there are 2 popular hang outs.... One is a strip club.... We met there.

MH is Cuban and thought he was being smooth by hitting on me in Spanish. I speak Spanish. I was trying to blow him off, you don't meet guys in strip clubs. He was very persistant, so finally I answered him back in Spanish. He was shocked.

For the rest of the night we talked and I actually really liked him. When my friend and I left, I told her I was going to marry him. It's 3 years later, we've been married for 2 months.

  • Hahaha no it was the Pink Pony... a little classier... and not by much.
  • We met online through a dating site but never intended to "date" or have a relationship because we lived so far apart. We were penpals. Penpals that fell in love as we got to know each other. ;)

  • DH was one of my first friends here in the UK. We worked together for a year and stayed in touch. Some years he was the only person who remembered to phone me on Xmas (my parents are rubbish!).

We met up a few years ago when we were both single just to catch up and we ignored everyone else around us. I left it 6 weeks after that before I even kissed him, but I knew he was a keeper.

    He's my best friend ever.

  • We met online 3 1/2 years ago.  We were both in a chat room on Yahoo! messenger and he IMed me.  We started talking and I thought he was funny and easy to get along with.  We talked everyday for 2-3 months.  He even got me to talk on the phone.  Actually, it was him talking, and me saying "I'm here" every once in a while.  (I was really, really shy.)  Then we had a huge fight and stopped talking, except for a text here and there every few weeks.  Finally I text him in October and he told me his father just died.  We started talking again everyday after that.  I flew to him in Australia, with my mom (she wouldn't let me go alone), to meet for the first time in Feb. 2008.  I started planning the wedding in May 08, even though we had one seen each other in person for 2 weeks.  I flew back down to him right after Christmas 08, met all his family, flew back to the US with him Jan. 21, 2009 and got married Jan. 30, 2009.  He flew back to Australia Feb. 5, 2009 by himself while I stayed here until I got my visa.  I was granted the visa on May 29 and flew to Australia June 25 and have been here ever since.

That is awesome. It is also about 5 minutes from my house, and yet I have never been. Now the Clermont? Sadly, too many times!

  • DH is American.

We met our first week freshman year of college - he was helping another girl in my dorm set up her computer.  We were both seeing other people at the time, so we didn't start dating for over a year after that.

  • We met online 9 years ago.  I answered his ad for a penpal and he replied.  It's been an everyday email, IM chat or phone call since.  The only days we've missed are the ones I "skipped" when crossing the dateline going to see him.

Haha I have actually only been to the Pink Pony. Never to any of the other ones... my gay friends always try to get me to go to Swinging Richard's though, so I am sure one day I will make it there... That is my favorite strip club name btw.

  • I was studying abroad in London for a semeser, my junior year of university, and I met him in a bar:) He was living in London working
  • DH is American.  We ended up on the same flight in Chicago due to fog.  He was flying back from a funeral, I was flying back from visiting my sister.

We so have a similar story...I moved over here to teach as well, had no friends and didn't really connect with the people I was working with (long story).  I joined a hockey club, got invited to a party and met my DH there...two months after moving here.
