Need recs. - January, somewhere warm, with kids

My sister and I are talking about going somewhere warm in January with our kids. Her kids are: 10, 8 and 7. My DD will be 17 months. We'll be either flying out of Toronto or Buffalo. We're considering anywhere in the Caribbean or Central America.

She's leaning toward an AI or some sort of beachy vacation. I like beaches as well but I'm leaning more toward a budget, "meet the locals", staying in mom and pop type accommodations. I've suggested a few days in an AI and a few days on our own. (Likely not a cruise - the last time she was on a cruise she got horrible vertigo that lasted for a few weeks.)

Any suggestions?

  • The Grand Palladium hotels (there is a complex of 4-in1) in the Mayan Riviera. Mexico are great for a group that includes kids. Plus the food is excellent, which is definitely important if you have a toddler - no need to worry, excellent conditions. There are lots of excursions you can do off the resort, but still have all of your food and everything included.

I would be very choosy about "mom and pop" type places in the Caribbean, I used to do them more when I was with girlfriends/single, but the older I get, the more i lean towards AI's down south. They never seem to disapoint.

  • Atlantis in the Bahammas. DH went there as a kid and he loved it and always talks about taking our kids there.
