Things To Do In/Around Anchorage

This is the time of year we seem to get a lot of questions about what to do in and around Anchorage.  Here are some of my recommendations:

Things to Do:

Biking/Walking on the Coastal Trail, Downtown Market (only open on Saturday and Sunday), Alaska Zoo, Hiking up Flattop for an awesome view of the city, Shopping - there's no sales tax in Anchorage, Portage Glacier - about 45 miles south of Anchorage, Girdwood - cool town about 40 miles south of Anchorage; one suggestion to do here is to take the Alyeska tram up the mountains for an awesome view of Turnagain Arm and the Chugach Mountains.  I also really like the spa at the Hotel Alyeska, Alaska Native Heritage Center, Anchorage Museum

Places to Eat in Anchorage:

Glacier Brewhouse, Simon and Seafort's, Snow City Cafe (especially for breakfast), Crow's Nest (located in the Hotel Captain Cook with an awesome view of the city), Nino's (yummy Italian food), Humpy's, Muffin Man, Alaska Gourmet Subs, Double Musky (located in Girdwood, very popular and they don't take reservations, so expect a wait - but worth it), Moose's Tooth, Bear's Tooth

Chilkoot Charlie's, Platinum Jaxx, Bernie's, Humpy's, Anchor, Simon and Seafort's (LOVE their lavendar cosmos), McGinley's

Re: Things To Do In/Around Anchorage

  • I just found out today that my brother is coming to visit in less than two weeks.  So, it's got me thinking even more about things to do in/around Anchorage and I have come up with a few more things:

Iditarod Museum (in Wasilla), Mahay's river boat tours (they have  few to choose from, located in Talkeetna), Alaska Railroad Tours - the trip to Seward is supposed to be good and includes a boat tour, but it's a full day trip.  There are also trail rides with Horse Trekkin' Alaska.  And check out Ship Creek in downtown Anchorage - but watch out for seagulls!  I got pooed on one time.

  • And Segway tours!  They have Segway tours of downtown.  Or you can go rafting in Hope, Alaska.
