Traveling for Business - help an OOT Nestie out!!:)

Hi everyone,

I am headed to New Orleans on Wed. afternoon for work.  I will be there for 5 night and the majority of the time I will be by myself.  I'm setting up for a tradeshow.  I'm staying at the Marriott, near the French Quarter.  Do you have any suggestions for restaurants to things to do?  I won't have a car.

Thanks!

 Amanda

How very softly you tiptoed into our world.

Almost silently.

Only a moment you stayed.

But what an imprint your tiny footprints have left upon our hearts.

  • To be quite honest with you, it may be best to travel in a group if at all possible.  The French Quarter is not really the type of place for a woman to walk around alone.

Now that I'm finished acting like a mother, I would suggest Cafe Du Monde, Cafe Adelaide, and Cochon (which is a little far away but delicious).  I also had the best gumbo of my life recently at the Gumbo Shoppe.

I hope you have a great time while you are in New Orleans.  Pack lots of cool clothes since its almost in the mid-90's already and be safe!

I agree with the pp brings lots of hot weather clothes it is going to be warm all week. I do have to disagree a little also with the pp, I have not felt unsafe walking alone in the French Quarter, it's so touristy and there are always people around, but stay on the main Streets(Bourbon, dectaur, Royal, etc), no diversions at night. The Riverwalk is easy for shopping and the movie theater at canal Place shows art films as well as more mainstream things. I would check out the House of Blues website and see if anyone is playing this week that sparks your interest.
John's Besh's bistro at the Hilton hotel is walking distance to you and is supposed to be really good. We haven't gone yet, but it's John Besh. Maspero's on Decatur has a bar so you could eat there and not look out of place. The food and restaurant at the Marriot isn't anything to rave over, but the service there from everyone is off the charts! We stayed there with my inlaws 6 weeks ago and I was blown away.

  • Definitely bring cool clothes and be prepared to sweat. Dressing up isn't necessary when going out in the Quarter at most places, so avoid all the fancy-schmancy stuff, and pack to relax and be comfortable. (Unless you have a nice dinner planned or something.)

I don't really feel unsafe in the Quarter either. Walking around the main streets as mzovoce said, should be fine. I wouldn't venture off onto any empty streets or side streets, as I wouldn't in any other major city but I typically would feel fine walking around and checking things out. Use your head. That's all. Don't stumble around drunk in other words.

There is so much to do down in the Quarter...we've found tons of things we've loved and others we've not liked at all. We just love to wander around and go inside places just to check em out...stay in the places we love, leave the places we don't love. Simple as that. It's fun to explore and window shop. It really just depends on what you like. So try it all out...

Have fun and enjoy your time here.
