Help w/ rice krispy treats

We're traveling to SC this weekend for DH's family reunions.  Since we're driving this year, I would like to take something.  I was thinking rice krispy treats, but I'd like to make them more patriotic.  ;)

Is there a way to die rice krispy treats red and blue?  If I divided the marshmallow batter and died part red and part blue, would it meld and become purple?

The rice krispy website has all kinds of recipes involving icing or sprinkles on top of the treats, but I don't think that will transport well.  (8 hours in a car!)  I also doubt that star shaped treats would survive in their star shapes.

  • I was going to suggest sprinkles, but I see you've already thought of that.

If you dye the marshmallow batter, I would just do one batch red, one batch blue and avoid mixing them because I would think it would probably turn purple.

  • I think they would turn purple also. Agree with the two batches.

Not sure if they sell (most likely do) colored chocolate chips - you could mix those in.

You could also use a cookie cutter and make them stars!

I wonder if you could find freeze-dried strawberries and blueberrys and mix them in.

  • Ahh -one more idea -

you could make them in layers - the bottom layer blue - make it flat and let cool - the second layer regular - make it flat and let cool - and the top red. You may have more than you want but I think that could work well

  • I dont know if they still do, but i thought that they used to make boxes of rice krispy cereal with red and blue rice krispys. I may be wrong though

This is what I was going to ask. I know they have red/white/blue M&M's you could mix in with it.

  • I would try to do the sprinkles! I think that would work best.. or just do 3 batches of marshmellow with different dye color.

  • an awesome way to incorporate the red would be to include the red hots candies in the treats. best if you can find stale candies (kinda gross i know, but then they're more chewy).

you headin' to Chapin? It is HOT so be prepared!! Hopefully you'll be able to enjoy the lake.

    I thought the same thing.

  • My crappy Safeway didn't have any colored rice krispies.  I'll look for M&Ms.

And yes - Chapin.  Every year we have to leave the awesome fireworks in DC to go to Chapin and watch the fireworks over Lake Murray from my BIL's pontoon swatting away bugs.  Just once I would like to stay home for a major holiday...
