Poll: Buying a home

Okay, we are putting our house on the market and we are trying to do all of the little maintenance things that need to be done. So far we have put up a new screen door, redone landscaping, put down loads of grass seed, fertilizer, weed killer, etc., thoroughly cleaned everything (I even shampooed the carpets) and touched up paint. So, now I need to know:

1. What is most important to you when looking at a house?

2. What are things that you would over look if you really liked the house?

3. What are the first things you notice when you go to a house?

4. What are things that cause you to automatically dislike a house?

  • 1. What is most important to you when looking at a house?  I tend to look at the size of the house, size of rooms; so make sure to declutter!  Also, remove all the wallpaper!  This is a must & a turn off for buyers because it's such a pain to do and/or expensive to hire out.

    2. What are things that you would over look if you really liked the house?  Paint colors; those are easily changed!  But a home sells quicker if Seller sticks to the neutral tones;

    3. What are the first things you notice when you go to a house?  Modern, neutral paint colors; cabinet hardware (kit or bath); updated faucets (kit & bath); declutter rooms and closets!

    4. What are things that cause you to automatically dislike a house?  Wallpaper!

also, you might pop in on a couple open houses in either your subd. or neighboring area's that are in your price range.  This way you'll see your competition and also how other's keep their home.........

  • 1. What is most important to you when looking at a house?  That it fits my requirements - i.e. we needed a 2 car garage so houses with only one or a detached garage automatically got moved down.  I also like big closets.  I also hate linoleum and wallpaper.

    2. What are things that you would over look if you really liked the house?  Paint colors.  Even if it is a neutral color I'm probably going to change it anyway so it can be whatever color you like.

    3. What are the first things you notice when you go to a house?  General cleanliness and upkeep.  (if you have stained carpet or something smells funny I'm going to assume you don't take care of your house well.)  We wouldn't have looked at houses that had cats b/c DH is allergic so that was a biggie for us.

     4. What are things that cause you to automatically dislike a house?  Trashy neighbors, bad location, detached garages, small rooms/closets

  • 1. What is most important to you when looking at a house? ?Floorplan, meets our minimum requirements.

    2. What are things that you would over look if you really liked the house? ?Definitely paint color, I could even overlook a small amount of wallpaper

    3. What are the first things you notice when you go to a house? ?Besides if they are smokers or not.....Bathrooms! ?How well kept they are (mold, mildew, etc)

    4. What are things that cause you to automatically dislike a house? ?That it doesnt meet our minimum requirements but I wouldnt even look at it if it didnt so beyond that it would be floorplan, smokers home, location, size of yard.

  • 1. What is most important to you when looking at a house? Now? It's definitely details. I want to make sure the floor looks even, there's no issues with water pressure. As far as the big things, I want to make sure there are plenty of closets, the master has a bedroom by it, that sort of thing.

    2. What are things that you would over look if you really liked the house? Kitchen or bathrooms needing remodeled. As long as it's good bones, I could look past bad decor.

    3. What are the first things you notice when you go to a house? Usually it's walls.

    4. What are things that cause you to automatically dislike a house? A bad layout, small bathrooms (not fun), small laundry room, no closet space, bedrooms on different floors.

  • 1. What is most important to you when looking at a house?
Clean look inside and out, and updated appliances

    2. What are things that you would over look if you really liked the house?
Paint color (soo easy to change)

    3. What are the first things you notice when you go to a house?
If it is light enough (open all the windows when you show it!), Also, if it is cluttered with knick knacks and lots of furniture its hard to personalize it.

    4. What are things that cause you to automatically dislike a house?
Wallpaper is a big one... bad smells are not good either.

I am an architect and I find it easy to imagine what the potential of a house is, but a lot of people have no idea unless you provide them with hints or create a clean slate. Make sure you 'stage" the house to make it look bigger and neutral. There are tons of website on how to properly stage a home and it costs no money. :)
