Diagnose me

brutal charlie horses (and because my multi-american region household always fights about what that means, i mean really bad leg cramps that strike at night). I get them all the time now! They wake me up, and my leg is sore all day. WTH?? Is this dehydration? Or some vitamin I am missing?

Re: Diagnose me

  • I of course am not diagnosing you :) but it could be a potassium thing or it could be a hereditary thing or you could have very tight calf muscles. Wouldn't hurt to get it checked out with a doctor or physio. I know a few people who have had their calves 'rolfed' and it seems to have helped. Hope you can get some relief.
  • My dad would always suggest eating bananas for potassium for charlie horses.

  • I get them all the time, too! I went through a stage a while ago where I got them even more often, and more painful, for a few months. Like you describe, my leg was sore the next day. I've heard the banana thing, but I eat a banana every day so I didn't think that was my problem, but you could try it. What ended up helping me (I think, although of course it might've just gone away on its own!) was stretching my calf muscles really well throughout the day, and before I went to bed. Hope it gets better!

  • Well, I do like bananas, so I'll try that and the stretching I guess. This is driving me crazy. I need my beauty sleep :P?

  • My mom always said to drink tonic water because it has quinine in it.  I don't know if it actually works but I guess it couldn't hurt.  I have had charlie horses before and they are so painful, so hopefully something will help.

  • That's weird-- I had two really bad (wake me up) charlie horses last night as well!

I've heard the same thing about it being due to low potassium, so might try that.  Another "home remedy" I've heard is to sleep with a bar of soap under your ankle (well, under the sheets, under you ankle).  Apparently, the slight elevation of your leg improves blood circulation (of course it doesn't have to be "soap" per se, just something to lift your ankle a little).  I toss and turn alot, so I haven't tried the soap thing, but thought I'd throw it out there.

    Feel better.

  • i had them w/pregnancy and my doc prescribed magnesium...not sure it helped. GL!
  • Yea, I heard it is quite common for pregnant women to get them. That must be fun... pregnancy is already so comfortable!?

Thanks for the advice you guys. I looked it up and it sounds like dehydration might be part of it. I'm going to try more water, but I'll definitely look into some of these other remedies if they continue at this rate. ?
