Menu

Hey ladies! I posted here about DH's 30th birthday party a few months ago and yall were really helpful. I'm the matron of honor in my friend's wedding in August. We're having a couple's shower for her and her fiance' the last weekend in June. Anyway, the theme is hawaiian/tropical because they were supposed to get married in Hawaii...after battles with family, they gave in and decided to have it locally. We've decided to bring Hawaii to them.?

So, I need help with a menu. The bridesmaids and I were thinking pulled pork/chicken, wings, different salads (potato, pasta, macaroni), tropical fruit salad, etc.

What do you think? Any suggestions??

Re: Menu

  • I like the pulled pork idea but I'm not seeing the different salads as hawaiian or tropical.  I think incorporating some coconut (I'm thinking as drink containers) would punch things up a little.  Also, use garnishes like orchids or other flowers to tie things in a little more.

I know she's getting married in Hawaii, but since your theme is tropical, I found a link to some tropical-themed menus that might help.

  • I like the pulled pork too, but wings and macaroni salad don't really say tropics to me.  Go with the fruit salad and this is a great potato salad- a little different and lighter.

I also like the idea of mixing in some orchids and coconut,

  • Ditto to pp - also here's a recipe I tried once, it turned out really good.  It's different (unique) and authentic.  It's definitely not hard at all, but time consuming and not cheap.  Maybe it would be cool to do 2 of these, one for the bride and one for the groom?  And then just citrus grilled shrimp for everyone else (not in the pineapple bowls with the other stuff).

Also - Oriental Trading Company has TONS of hawaiian decorations, some are pretty cheesy but you can find some really good stuff in there too.

  • Lurker here, I know this is going to sound terrible but it's surprisingly good: grilled Spam and pineapple skewers.

Spam is huge - huge - in Hawaii so it is authentic!  It's really quite tasty if you can get over the "OMG that's Spam?!" mentality.

  • If you can dig a pit and roast a whole pig that would be really cool! I was also thinking Mahi Mahi kabobs (yum) with a pineapple chutney. Shrimp - grilled or coconut. Make sure you have a lot of fresh tropical fruit!

Here are a few sites with menu ideas...

Also, you will get a TON of ideas if you google Hawaiin Luau ideas/menu/decor etc.

I would do simple decorations - string lights in the trees, bright table cloths, decorate with tropical fruit and flowers (having a few whole pineapples on the buffet will look nice).

    Good luck and have fun!!!

  • Also - have someone greet all of the guest and hand out leis!!!
  • Grilled pineapple is awesome!

Leis are a great idea too!

maybe tiki torches if it's outside - just sounds cool :)

  • Thanks ladies =) I'll definitely ditch the different salads. I think we'll do pulled pork/chicken and some pineapple/chicken kabobs. We'll definitely do a tropical salad and I'm going to pull some dishes from the websites listed! We'll be hanging lanterns, getting bright colored table linens, tiki torches, a tent, and all that jazz.?

    Thanks again...yall helped a lot!?

Not sure what your budget is, but if you can swing it get real orchid leis for the bride and groom - they are SO beautiful
