my book idea, WDYT

I am contemplating writing a book.  I worked out this outline, sort of reminds me of a cross between The Memory Keeper?s Daughter, a situation in my family, and what I hope my life doesn?t become.  Does this sound any good at all?  Obviously I have to do some research before I could go forward, but this is the basic idea

On their 3rd wedding anniversary Amy and Brian decide its time to have a baby.  Both are excited.

She gets pregnant within the first few months and gives him a ?Worlds Greatest Dad? tee shirt.

She miscarries.

Amy gets pregnant again, has another miscarriage and becomes consumed with getting pregnant.  Brian suggests adoption and Amy laughs it off.

After trying for a year and learning that her younger sister is pregnant, Amy and Brian see a fertility specialist and begin invetro.

Shortly after Amy has a successful pregnancy and gives birth to Joseph.  Her and her sister spend a great deal of time raising their boys as at home moms.  Amy and Brian have spent all of their money on fertility and their relationship is strained.

Brian, Amy?s sister, and the dr. begin to make comments about Joeys development and question whether or not there may be a problem.  Amy dismisses these claims for another year before it is obvious that there is a problem and Joey is diagnosed with autism.  Trips to specialists and Amy?s guilt over failing as a mother add more strain to the marriage.

Brian begins an affair with Sarah and leaves Amy.  He continues to see Joey.  He marries Sarah within a year and she becomes pregnant with a healthy baby girl.

Amy continues to deal with Joey?s autism as a single mother and sees a priest to confess to the sins she believes she has committed (perhaps she was never ment to have a child).  She is jealous of her sister and Brian and Sarah and believes she messed with God?s plan by getting pregnant.

Story concludes with Amy at the park with Joey, Brian, and his daughter, Olivia.  She is able to be happy for Brian and has come to terms with the life she has been dealt and realizes she must be happy for the many blessings she has, most of all Joey.

Re: my book idea, WDYT

  • That's so strange you posted this because I was just throwing around ideas earlier for a novel. The thought has never ever crossed my mind and I don't know where it came from. I'm not as organized as you though!

I think it sounds good, I would read it. I think there are a lot of parents with autistic children who struggle IRL that could relate to the story and the strains that having a special needs child puts on a marriage.

  • I think it is pretty funny that my name is Amy and my sister, Sara, is dating a guy named Brian!

I think it sounds like a good book idea!  I would definately read it!

  • I would definitely read this. Yes Good outline!

    Sounds good!

The only thing that I would consider looking into is that signs ofAutism usally don't appear until around ages 2 or 3.

  • I would read it!

You might want to read Happiness Sold Separately by Lolly Winston. It is sort of similar to your idea (not too similar though).  The husband and wife have been trying to pregnant for years and have been unsuccessful and the husband starts having an affair.  I think it could give you some place to start from.

    Good luck!

  • Sounds good. I would read it.
