Swine Flu Poll

Are people in your area freaking out?  Apparently we had a run on anti-bacterial hand gel and wipes today - and there are no reported outbreaks in my state or in any of the states surrounding us.  My boss sent his secretary to the store to buy every remaining packet of hand wipes and we are now supposed to wipe everything in our offices down every hour.  What happened to hand washing?

Re: Swine Flu Poll

  • Yep.  They're freaking out.  And there aren't any cases in MD.  Figures.

I don't get it... more people die from the regular flu every year than the swine flu is affecting.

And people seemed to have forgotten the whole hand-washing practice.

  • I live in Kansas, and there are several cases here. One more is possibly going to be confirmed in a town 30 minutes are from where I am.

That being said, I haven't really seen anyone freaking out. If that one case is confirmed for Swine Flu though, I will probably be making a correction to this post.

  • Hmmm...I haven't been out much, so I'm not sure if people are freaking out here or not. But my spidey-sense tells me they are; I mean, that's what people typically do, right?

ETA: I don't think we have any documented cases in Ohio yet.

  • People here (RI) don't seem to be freaking out yet, but of course everyone is talking about it. ?I just keep telling people to WASH THEIR HANDS. ?I work with kids/adults all day long (I give IQ tests), so I've just been washing my hands a ton and being careful not to rub my eyes (just like any other flu season). ?

This.  And there have been a few cases here in IL.

  • A bit.  I don't know about freaking out, but everyone seems to be talking about it.

  • Yeah, I think it's a diversion tactic from the million other things that are more likely to kill us. But- if it makes our facilities folks feel useful, then who am I to say? We will soon have anti-bacterial hand stuff all over our office. I hate using it.

  • Do you have it click here or here

I have students flipping out because there are now 2 reported cases in CO.   These are the same kids that eat Mcdonalds everyday, smoke a pack of cigarettes, and get high at lunch.

  • We have quite a few suspected case in CA and a few confirmed as close as within my county and neihboring counties.  Some schools are shut down.  People don't seem to be freaking out though, just cautious.  It seems like every year there's something that is going to kill us all but it never does.

  • They have five kids here that tested positive for Flu A which I guess Swine Flu is considered but they aren't calling it that yet. They shut down the middle school where the five kids go for two weeks.

My boss is freaking out and told me that if I have any symptoms I'm to call in. Last night she went out and stocked up on hand sanitzier and tried to buy masks and they were out! lol  Needless to say she is very worried about this.

I on the other hand for some reason am not worried at all which is funny for me being a germaphobe. Like everyone else said, wash your hands, you should do that regularly anyways, and cover your coughs and sneezes.

  • I've sort of been sequestered at home studying and today is my first day back at work all week but people don't seem to be freaking out.  The news makes me worry but other than that everything seems normal.

My mom did tell me today though that her 4th graders are really freaked out by it.  She said they had to have a little talk this morning.  Not sure what she told them but she said it made her sad to see them so scared.

  • I work with the general public (dental office) and we've had a few patients cancel due to fear of the flu. I've had several call and ask if we we're taking extra steps.  I've always been a big hand sanitizer user between patients and what not anyway, so I haven't changed that at all.

There are a few confirmed cases in the county next to us and I guess a few in some area towns, nothing in the town I work in or the town I live in.

Me too. I'm not concerned about getting it myself. That little boy running around without a care or caution in the world is who I worry about. There's a "probable case" in a town not too far but most people I know still aren't freaking out. Our local news anchor likes to make a HUGE deal out of how there is no cure for it. Umm, dude, there's no cure for the "human flu" either. Duh.

There actually have been a few suspected outbreaks in MD - they aren't yet confirmed, I don't think.

But, yeah, I'm so sick of hearing about it.

  • Yeah, they're freaking out. I'm not complaining though because I get 2 days off which equals a 4 day weekend!!

  • ugh, yea kind of.  no one I work with is though because we're all microbiologists and my boss is on a microbiological committee for the fed government and knows lots of people (personally) at the CDC.  There's just a lot of eye-rolling going on at my work at all the people wiggin out.  We work with a biological agent daily so we're ALWAYS washing hands, using hand sanitizer, etc.  all day.  I have the dryest hands known to man.

  • Here in AZ a kid died in PHX and I'm in Southern AZ near the border so it's freakin a lot of people out. I teach at an elementary and our principal sent home an info sheet about it. Mostly reminding people to just have good hygeine and stay home if they are sick. At our prof. devel. last night we were asked to have soap and antibacterial gel around for the kids and to hose them down with the gel anytime we want.

I think you can be too clean... germs are a good thing. Whatever happened rolling in dirt then taking a shower?

  • Personally, not really.  From a work standpoint, sort of because I need to develop contingency plans in case the situation becomes worse.  We're an entertainment company so that means large crowds of people in one place.

  • I'm a nurse in PA and it really bothers me that even the hospital I work at is calling it the "swine flu" when that's just the media's name given to it!!! H1N1 is the name of the strain and I don't care what the press calls it but I think professionals should call it what it is! (rant over).?

Anyway, I don't think people are "freaking out" but I know our hospital is preparing for cases of flu. Years ago when the threat of bird flu was all the rage I took a box of the N95 masks home "just in case" haha. They're the same mask that we have to wear when we care for a patient with TB and they're awful! I end up hyperventilating when I wear them, couldn't imagine living in them.

  • If they are, I haven't noticed. No one was running around in masks at Target tonight, but I wasn't exactly looking for signs of panic either. I don't think there have been any reported cases anywhere near here though, so that's probably why.?

Oh wait, DH did say that at work they are no longer allowed to shake hands, and were told to avoid doing so at other times as well. We both got quite a giggle out of that, as he's probably shaken one hand in three years anyway. Computer geeks are not big hand shakers. ?

    I also hate those masks!

I am also a nurse in PA, and the hospitals and health departments in our area have a plan in place in case of a pandemic...but we have no reported cases here yet.  The closest, I think, are at the University of Delaware.

That said, I am getting on a plane and going to Florida in less than a week and going to Disney World, and no strain of the flu is going to stop me!

  • I am a teacher and the schools are just becoming prepared, just in case.  There have been two suspected cases in Indiana, in Wabash I think.  We are just stressing washing hands with soap, really, really good.  I don't think it is any different than during flu season.
  • We've had some confirmed cases here in Houston and a death, but I'm not freaking out. Some schools have been closed as well and all high school sporting events in Texas have been canceled until May 11 I believe.

My coworkers and family are not freaking out, but are being cautious. Our office hasn't gone as far as having everybody use hand sanitizers, but I wouldn't be surprised if that doesn't happen pretty soon! Like some pp said, the only thing that really worries me about this is my 8 month old son and really don't want him to get sick.

My BIL's fiance went to the Dr. this week and when she walked in they made everybody put on a mask. Apparently there was a family there who had just been to Mexico. I'm not sure if they had symptoms of the swine flu or not. Now that would freak me out just a bit!
