Prodigal Son Returns

My mother returned from her trip Monday. She had a good time and with any trip, it goes by way too fast. She is back to her quiet self when it comes to me. I go over, she is forced to talked to me, we watch t.v. and then I go home. Most of you may know that my brother made the trip with her. He couldn't find the time to go to by wedding, but found the time to go with my mother. He is flying back to Jacksonville on Friday, which I was told yesterday, and will be here until next Thursday. I love it how no one wants to tell me these things, but expect me to be the one to go the airport. Should I try to talk to him about DH or should I just not care at this point on whether they like him or not?

Re: Prodigal Son Returns

  • Since he is the one that tipped the scales on your mother's opinion, yes, I would make the effort to sit him down immediately upon his arrival and have a chat. He's your brother, so be blunt and insist that he hear you out RIGHT NOW. Until he visited, your mother had a fine relationship with your DH, then she takes something your brother says and blows it up to an extreme and your brother somehow sees fit not to set this straight. To me, he sounds like an attention wh0re. He loves that your mother pays attention to him only and not you or your older brother, while meanwhile you do all the work of making the family continue to relate.

Why else would he have sided with her when he KNOWS how all that went down?

I would tell him, frankly, that he knows very well that your DH trailed around after him and his wife, and spent all that time over there trying to get to know them, and he needs to own up to it, to DH and to your mother. He should apologize for ruining her relationship with your DH and siding with her in not attending your wedding, and now making it even worse for gallavanting around the world with her. Just because HE doesn't care if the family knows he's married doesn't mean he can ruin your life too.

Now your mother has since added even more stupidity on top of it with her made-up reasons of why she disapproves of him, and she is obviously as hard-headed as it gets, so she may not ever back down. But the least your brother can do, as your brother, is do what is right on his side.

If he won't? I would totally wash my hands of him. Don't visit when he's there, and don't keep sanctioning this with your silence.

You know I love you, but seriously, this whole thing is f*cked up. You need to lay down the law like I know you know how.

  • What she said.

I'm sorry you're having to go through this... STILL!  No

  • Pick him up at the airport and drop him off at my place. I'll take care of it.

    Devil

  • Well, I don't know the story like Sarah does, so I will just have to agree with her.  Take and stand and make sure he knows how you feel.

  • I think you're being treated completely unfairly. I think you've made an effort and unfortunately, it has not been reciprocated. At one point, you may just need to cut your losses. I had to through that with my father. Yes, it was hard, but everything is so much easier now.
  • And honestly, I don't know how anyone could not like your DH.  He's so nice!

  • Thanks you guys. Sarah- I may have to take you up on the offer of dropping him off to your house.

I think that it is completly childish that he acts this way. He is 45, not 5. I will start with the airport drive to my mother's. Where are the rational people in my family? I forgot to mention that I talked with my uncle yesterday. I gave the phone to my mother so that she could talk to him. She is all excited to tell him that my brother was coming into town and that he (my uncle) should try to come to Jacksonville to see him. WTF? They aren't related!
