Stainless vs. black appliances

Dh and i are in the process of building and we can not decide to go with stainless or black appliances!! any suggestions or opinions would be greatly appreciated.!

Re: Stainless vs. black appliances

  • We went with black appliances because I didn't want to have to clean it all the time (fingerprints, etc.) like I always hear people I know who have stainless complain about.  Also the price is better and we preferred the look.  HTH!

When we were remodeling our kitchen this is something we also thought about. Sure the SS looks great but it shows everything! So we decided on black appliances and have no regrets.

We decided on black, but ended up with a mixture of both after the fridge I wanted only came in white & SS. My reasoning was practical - it didn't seem worth it to spend hundreds extra for a finish that was purely cosmetic. Our stove & dishwasher are black, our microwave is stainless & black, and our fridge is stainless.

This is why we are going with black.  Our friends have SS and every time we go over there the fingerprints all over the fridge and dishwasher drive me nuts!  My Uncle also got a SS grill.  He said he hates cause he can never get it to look clean.

  • Go with black. When we moved into our now home it came with a SS fridge and I HATE IT!! Sure it looks good if you can remove the fingerprints (I havent been able to from prev. owners) I'd go with black. Our stove is black and classic.
  • We recently had to buy all new appliances for our new home and we went with all black.  The people at the store couldn't believe that I was a woman and didn't want stainless.  Duh, I don't want to spend my whole life cleaning up fingerprints from future kids!

However, if you're looking for resale value.... most people do like stainless.  If you plan on staying there for a while, go with black.

  • I like stainless appliances.  I don't have a problem with finger prints, ever.  We don't have kids so maybe that makes the difference?   We just don't put our hands all over the appliances.  That's why they have handles! Wink

I just wipe them down with a stainless cleaner wipe, just like I would wipe down a black or white appliance with a lysol wipe or something similar when they needed to be cleaned.  Just because the appliances are black and you can't really see the dirt, doesn't mean they aren't dirty, and I would clean non-stainless appliances just as much as I clean my stainless ones.

  • We have black and we're both glad we didn't go with SS.  Black is not only cheaper, but the fingerprints on SS would drive me nuts!

I think black is a classic look, where SS may go out of style at some point (remember avacado and almond appliances?!)

  • I wanted to badly to get black aplliances for my new house, but the builder only gave us a white oven and dishwasher...we thought it would be funny if we got a black refridgerator and black microwave (above the oven) so we went with white..

    But I love Black...do that....I would

  • We have Stainless and have no finger print problems- and my neice and nephew are at the house all the time. I clean everything with SS cleaner when I do the rest of my cleaning (just as I would clean different colored appliances) and it always looks great.

Are you planning on staying in your home? If you are, go with your gut and whatever you think you deep down like more. But if you're planning on selling anytime soon I would go with SS. I'm a HGTV junky and they still rave about SS in a kitchen.

  • We have all Fridgedaire products, and they are not stainless steel, but the look Silver Mist. We loved the look. They are mixed with black accents.

  • DH and I have differing opinions on this, too. I like black appliances and he likes stainless steel. I wouldn't want to clean off the finger prints all the time with stainless steel, but I guess you could have finger prints with black appliances, too.

  • We went with black because of the same reasons pps stated.  I've had friends complain about them. Our black appliances look great with out black/red/brown granite.

With that said, it also depends on the value of the home.  We have a mid priced house for the area.  If we had a high end house/neighborhood, I think SS would be expected.  Many of the houses around us have basic kitchens and SS would look out of place.

  • Great Question! We always planned on SS and now I will have to re-evaluate.
  • I like the Fridgidaire Silver Mist option. That's exactly what I want for my house.

Of course, if I had to decide strictly between SS and black, I'd get SS. I like it better. My kitchen is already dark, and the black would look goth in our kitchen. I also don't have kids, so cleaning fingerprints is not an issue. I also find that Bar Keepers Friend cleans all things stainless, and it is wonderful.

    Ditto this.

  • We do not have a horrible time with finger prints on our SS...I actually have a harder time keeping the black top on our stove looking clean.  Black shows any and all fuzz , etc

I have not noticed any fingerprint issues with my stainless range, or any need to clean more frequently; but I have noticed RUST! I'm surprised nobody else mentioned this, my range is only 2 yrs old.

I'm going with black in the future.

  • I hate SS because of the finger prints. Even the SS trash cans that are finger print proof are lying. My parents have one and there are definitely finger prints on the trash can. Go with black.
